Star Trek Online adopting free-to-play model later this year

I remember looking at Star Trek Online when it first started up. Never played it though, but when of goes free-to-play I'll take it for a spin

Free to play? Might also check it out... I remember that it got a lukewarm reception on release, maybe they've released patches to correct/improve it....

I've always wanted to try it out but my ADSL has been wonky over the last year. Now I'm using Cell C and I haven't tried to play any games using it. Hopefully STO will be playable.

Heh ... I was actually kinda expecting this to happen, especially after Atari dumped Cryptic and handed them over to Perfect World.

I've been wanting to give this a spin for a while now (being a Trekkie of sorts), but based on what I saw I didn't really know if the sub was worth paying. F2P is a whole different matter though.

I'd be happy to pay for a title once off without subs a la Bf2 / Guild Wars etc. In fact, if it wasn't for ActiBlizzard dominating and showing that there was piles of cash to be made, I think more companies would have thought of going the GW route as well.

I'd love to see DC Universe's MMO become once-off / f2p.

Apparently it sucks, though, so it was expected. I think I saw a review on MyGaming a while back, and about a month later the reviewer went back to do a 'second impressions' review, and said it sucked.

I haven't dabbled in the MMO world yet (apart from playing 20minutes of Runescape). When this goes F2P, I might seriously check it out. I see many people in this thread haven't played it yet, so I can't really ask them how it is.

Hopefully someone who has can come enlighten us about this game.

I played the trial when it was first released and I was not impressed. I don't really remember much of it, but combat and quests were pretty boring. The best part was probably ship combat that had some good parts, but it always felt like you were flying around inside a tiny box and not out in space.
I hear it's changed since then, but I don't know.

Maybe I'll give it a try, just to see how it is again.
