How custom can your ships be?

Hmmm ... I'm not sure how clearly I'll be able to explain this without screenshots, but I'll give it a go ...

Each ship class basically has 3 variants, and each ship consists of 4 ... errr ... parts, if you will - Saucer, Hull, Nacelles and Pylons (the bit that attaches the nacelles to the hull). Your customization lets you alternate the parts, so in the case of my ship in the picture above:

It's a long range science vessel that comes in 3 variants: Intrepid, Cochrane and Discovery. So you can for instance use the Discovery Saucer, Intrepid Hull and Cochrane Nacelles and Pylons, as an example. There are also 4 different types of hull materials which can change the appearance of your ship to a degree, and you can also apply certain two colour patterns.

So while you are limited to using the specific variants within each class, you can end up with a ship that isn't totally similar to everyone else's.

I've heard there is a lot more customisation available when you get to Rear Admiral, but I haven't gotten that far yet, so I'm not sure.

Hmmm can anyone confirm whether it's possible to download the whole client? I'm on 3G so I'll probably get someone to download everything for me. If it's going to download before area then I probably won't be able to play it.

When you open the Launcher, hit "download on demand" to off [its under options]. This forces STO to download all files at once.

Cool that makes perfect sense, thanks Fox.

I forgot to mention that you can customise the interior of your ship to a degree as well - there are different bridge-styles and layouts, and three different interior layouts if you should feel the need to wander around inside your vessel. There isn't much to do there yet, so it's more of a pointless add-on than anything else - although I've heard that there are various ideas in the pipeline (I'd love to see a mission where your ship gets invaded by Borg and you have to fight them off - the Borg are a fairly major part of the gameplay at the moment).

What self respecting trekkie wouldn't want to wander aimlessly inside their own ship?

Once I have my new laptop Ill give this ago, it wont run on my current one.

okay someone add me as a friend so I don't feel so tottaly lost here :D

Gema
U.S.S Nox

I'll add you tonight Waco :) You're gonna feel totally lost anyways - but the game has a buddy type system that'll let us match levels so I can come run a mission or two with you.

I'll admit the game can be a little overwhelming to start with :)

Yeah the start of the game is very overwelming but the explinations of the systems and so forth are really easy. Must say the combat on the ground feels weird but getting use to it.

Yeah ... the ground missions do feel a hit clunky, especially after you've been in a couple of space-battles, which feels really fluid by comparison. There seems to be a horrible lag sometimes between clicking on an action and having it happen - which may be due to latency, but I haven't felt it in space as much, even when grouped with other players.

Gaaah ... you guys are all hopping aboard before I even have a chance to finish my guide and claim credit for all your possible future successes ...

:D

Heh, I'm sure I'll end up using it anyway. :D

Download has started, ETA is 9-10 hours. So I could start playing tonight from around 9 or so.

Fair enough - I'll probably be online for a bit, but probably not too long - double XP and double drops in Aion tonight, so I'll be spending most of my time there :p

Okay cool just remember to launch it since there are more patches.

How do you get past the patching when your loading diffrent area's?

Bleh must say the servers are not inpessing me downloading at A whopping 10kbp or less.

Well my download speeds have now gone down from 100KB/s to 80KB/s so it's highly likely I may not play tonight.

This sounds quite fun, might join you guys some time.

Also in response to the combat feeling clunky, why oh why didn't they make the combat more like Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force II, that was epic.

Anyhow "live long and prosper" will see about maybe getting the game.
