Star Trek Online - General Discussion

Triple post...ah! Talk people, talk :D

Anyway, if you'd like a buddy key feel free to PM me. It's essentially a 5-day free trial. You can download the majority of the client locally (check the Local MMO Downloads thread stickied in this forum section). You'll just need to patch it up to the latest version.

EDIT: Apparently I'm not eligible to dish them out yet. May be my account type though.

Was considering this, but I hate Star Trek. Then again, I played SWG and I hate Star Wars. This one seems a bit too weird though, dunno. Still looking at the features and what not.

Noooo! You hate Star Trek and yet you have a Star Trek avatar and signature? Blasphemy I tell you! Blasphemy! :p

I'm a hardcore EVE player but willing to give this a go as my casual MMO, might be interesting, otherwise I might fire up WoW again.....

It seems that no one can get the MMO right. Pity, I was keen to try something different, think i will also have another look in about 4 months time.

so I played for the whole of Saturday and haven't logged in again. just too meh. Seems the only "quests" I get are patrol sector x or patrol sector y. Is there a storyline of somekind? Am I missing something?

Space battles are okay, I find myself mashing the direction arrows for shield redistribution and the ground fighting is very meh

You get to explore unknown systems too.

But on the whole, yes, there isn't much variety. That combined with the lack of crafting etc. is probably the reason why it's sliding down the Xfire ranks so quickly.

Don't they pretty much all a month after release? :p

But yeah, this game is very, very mediocre when you do some reading up about it. Sure, there will be the fans, and I have no issue with people loving the game, but it is just not that great for a large amount of players who are looking for something big, new, or fresh.

So glad I skipped this one.

Aion's held on pretty well...currently at #9.

Well the game got pretty slated universally. So maybe its Xfire, or maybe its the game. Either way the game is no great shakes; not even close after reading up about it.

#692 down from #395 yesterday
Highest: #19 on 2010-02-03

Holy smoke and I wanted to check this game out see whats it all about but dam only 16 players played it today on xfire :O

It has to be some sort of detection issue =/ I can't see so many people suddenly stopping play at the same time.

Given the recent developments around Cryptic and their Star Trek MMO, I figured it may be worth reviving this thread:

Cryptic's staff seem to be pretty upbeat about the recent move to Perfect World and their move to a F2P model - from the outsider's point of view it seems that it's dying - although Cryptic differs.

There was an interview with Cryptic last week during which they mentioned that details of their move to F2P will be posted on the site today - so I'm going to be keeping an eye on the site (http://startrekonline.com/). I know it got slated, but my experience with Aion taught me that an MMO at release and an MMO a year down the line can be two massively different things.

I'm keen to give it another go when it goes F2P. Was massively disappointed the first time played, but apparently content has gotten alot better. Also intrigued by the player based missions, they sound very interesting.

I'm good for anything new to play after slowly growing tired of Aion. I'm also starting to think that hopping onto an MMO (GW2 excluded, since it uses a completely different model) right at the beginning is probably not the best move ever to make, since people tend to whip through the initial content and then complain because there is nothing to do.

Coming in a year or so down the line with lots of additional content and fixes having been added should make it worth playing for a bit, especially if I'm not putting down money for it.
