Star Wars Battlefront on consoles is pretty much R1000...

How do you feel about Battlefront being priced at R1k?

So if console games are going around R1000 now, does that mean that a decent PC rig is worth 6 console games?

Seems like a deal with me. Spend R500 on Steam and you can get a ridiculous amount of games, some that are barely a year old.

Hey guys! Thanks for participating in this, I've written up the first piece about the price increases.

Last month, Electronic Arts and DICE launched Star Wars Battlefront, the shooter that’s replacing what would have been a Battlefield launch this year, and it’s a great game, as evidenced by our recent review of it by Dane, and the first impressions that my brother Matthew and I wrote during the beta. But while it is deserving of the accolades it’s been given by critics elsewhere on the internet, I never noticed until these past few weeks that Battlefront has finally taken us past the point of no return – the game costs R1,000 in most walk-in stores and online retailers. Yikes! But it’s not just Battlefront, as I later discovered. Hit the jump and join me as I learn more about this sad situation.

A decent PC rig doesn't go for R6000. It goes for R20 000. However a decent PC is still a better option than a console.

As someone who owns both. A console is still not a bad option though at R5000 and then subscribing to XBox Live or the PS alternative for R400 a year which equates to 4 games a month. 2 XBox One games and 2 XBox 360 games that can be played on the XBox One. I mean this month alone we get:
The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing (One)
Thief (One)
CastleStorm (360)
Sacred 4 (460)

That alone will keep you entertained for a month without buying any new games.

Should you want to buy games you can get Telltales' Game of Thrones or Tales of the Borderlands for about R100 when it was on special. And so forth.

Or you can buy that R6000 PC and play older and indie games which is still amazing.

But do note that newer AAA pc games are also expensive. Fallout 4 on Steam? R 799.00. Fallout 4 on the XBox One? R799:

Surprised?

A console is not a bad option. Neither is a PC. Both have their advantages. Just ask BeoTeK. He owns 2 consoles and a PC and play games on all of them. Now that's a gamer!

I get the feeling you're taking this personally.

Having a look at current prices, you're right, 6k is a little low (my brain is running on better rand/dollar rates), but 20k is insane. For a starter, 10k would be more than enough for 1080p 60FPS. My 960 and second gen i5 from 2011 handles that just fine at a mix of High/Ultra. Looking at my receipts, from 2010 to 2015, I've spent 8k on my machine, although that was with better rand to dollar rates. Lets say you bought a PS3 in 2010, and a PS4 in 2015. Who would have spent more?

I can't find any current deals that have a console at 5k. The cheapest I saw was that one day CNA XBone deal for R5500. Looking around, non-sale prices for consoles are around R6.2 - 7k. I also found both PS+ and Xbox Live are going for R750 for a years membership. You have to pay that if you want to play online, which is another can of worms entirely. I also don't think that's a good deal, as usually the games you get are quite old. Buying the specific games you want on sale or in a bundle on PC will total to a similar price at years end, and the online play is free.

Cherry picking examples for prices of games goes both ways. ;) Currently on Steam there are 172 games on special. How many of those are cheaper on the Xbox Store? How many of those are even available on the Xbox store? That's a potshot, sorry. "whistling:

Just today, Sony was in the news as they're charging for PS2 games again, even for people who already bought them on the PS3. At least the PC is always backwards compatible. I stand by my belief that PC is an all-round cheaper alternative to a console, and a better gaming experience thanks to the higher framerates and the possibility to upgrade in the future. Plus, PC gets the highest number of exclusive titles. There are a lot of games that will only work with a keyboard and mouse. "Exclusive" titles on the PS4 or XBOne are there for business reasons, not compatibility ones.

I personally find the argument that a XBOne or a PS4 has a fundamental advantage over a PC, in any regard, flawed. We can agree to disagree on that one. :p Now the Wii U on the other hand... an argument can be made there purely because the Wii U does its own thing. Nintendo isn't competing with Sony, Microsoft or Valve. Honestly, I don't even think they know who they're competing with any more.

Saw the edit: I think that term is silly. I also read books and watch films. Does that make me a filmer or booker too? Occasionally I see stage productions. Am I a stager? I don't see why people who play games need a special title to feel as if they're part of an elite club. If I don't need a title for other types of entertainment, I don't need one because I also play games. I'm sorry that I don't fit the mold, but I see no reason to buy a console.

This seems more like a subjective thing to me. If someone spends R4k on a PC that'll be hooked up to a 768p monitor and plays games at medium settings, isn't that a decent rig by their standards? R6k buys you a decent tower that'll even do 1080p all day long, but not at 60fps without a few tweaks.

But do note that newer AAA pc games are also expensive. Fallout 4 on Steam? R 799.00. Fallout 4 on the XBox One? R799:

Bethesda is a little crazy with that price, but I expect that they're going to try ride it out as much as possible and drop the price after Q1 2016. They did spend a lot of money and dev time on it, and I expect their shareholders want to see a nice, fat return.

Hehe I kind of expected to see more replies by this morning. :)

It's like I wrote in my post. PC gaming is definitely a better option than console gaming. There's no denying it.

I'm just defending console gaming. :

Hehe sorry mate, I was writing that post tongue in cheek. I should have added a :p smiley face or something. :)

As for the prices:
CNA had this on special:
Xbox One 1TB 4 Game Bundle – R4799
Includes:
Xbox One 1TB Console
Gears of War Ultimate Edition
Ori and the Blind Forest
Rare Replay
Titanfall

And I bought a R400 XBox Live voucher for R400 on Black Friday. Which makes for 4 free games a month for a year.

What I was getting at with my post is that yes, PC gaming is much better than console gaming. Games are cheaper, there's more to choose from, it's more powerful. I even started of that post with a decent PC is a better option than a console. But that there's a place for a console. It's got a low cost of entry and with something like XBox Live you never have to buy a game again. For your average gamer (not people like us who visit gaming forums and are big game fans) a console is a good alternative to pc gaming.

And as you go up the scale you get to my comment about BeoTeK with which I meant tongue in cheek that the TRUE ELITE gamer games on everything. :p

I had a feeling you were messing with me, especially with that R20K comment. Your post needed more emotes. Can't believe I got trolled by you again. Bah, one day I'll get you back. ;)

Whats a 1000 rand just wait a month or two then you gonna see some real shit.Ps+ is a godsend in these troubled times.

The thing is, if you buy a R20k PC now, chances are it will outlive both consoles and last deep into the next generation without needing upgrades. If you bought a really good R20k PC, you can most likely do upgrades on selected parts to extend life even longer. I seriously doubt people buy R20k PCs every 5 years vs. simply swopping out the GFX/CPU.

Now i recently bought a R18k PC (which is a monster vs. a console as far i'm concerned) , and i know i could've cut it down to +- R12 if i went for the "2nd in line" GFX and CPU combos (i wanted 6th Gen Intel which is probably more expensive than the speed they add) . The diff between the R12k and R20k on a game like Fallout 4 would have been marginal.

On a side note, i now hooked up my monster PC to the same TV my Xbox One is, also managed to sort my USB cabling out to have my Xbone controller -and- Keyboard+Mouse set up on the PC . So i'm not ending up using my PC more than my Xbox , purely because i have more apps and more control over what i do on there.

Didn't want to get the game, just because of games being so damn expensive! But i took the plunge. Got it on raru for R399.00
