Starbucks coming to SA
May 31, 2010 11:56 AM | By Sapa

Starbucks coffee will be served in SA in time for the World Cup.

It would be available in select Southern Sun Hotels and Tsogo Sun Casinos in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, Tsogo Sun Gaming said in a statement.

African farmers produced some of the most extraordinary coffees in the world and Starbucks had a long history of purchasing coffee from Africa.

"This move into South Africa is another sign of Starbucks commitment to doing business in Africa."

Southern Sun MD Graham Wood said the company was "excited" about the association.

"We look forward to being able to offer our guests the large variety of coffee options that will be available to them in select hotels."

Starbucks would be available at Johannesburg's SunSquare Montecasino Hotel and InterContinental Johannesburg Sandton Towers, Southern Sun Cullinan Hotel in Cape Town and Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel in Durban.

I think it's a good move by them. The stores in the various hotels will still be open to the public no doubt. It's a less risky means of them entering the market where they will face competition from the likes of Vida and Mugg & Bean, and the effects of the economic climate. Hoteliers are more likely to dish out some cash on Starbucks' pricier coffees. They'll no doubt expand into stores if this venture proves successful.

It's not just some American who has it :D

Starbucks is the largest coffeehouse company in the world, with 17,133 stores in 49 countries, including 11,068 in the United States, nearly 1,000 in Canada and more than 800 in Japan.

I don't know why everyone is getting so excited: after tasting most of their variants in two different countries, I can confirm that Starbucks coffee is pretty awful.

I'd rather hit Spar and get a tin of Illy or even some el cheapo House of Coffees, thanks.

Ciro Chit Chat and moca java, pack of each, mix ??? Profit! :)

if i have to use instant coffee Nescafe Alta Rica. expensive ya. but tastes good :)

as for starbucks, don't know it so cannot comment

THIS.

Seriously, Starbucks coffee is revolting. It tastes like watery gravy or something. :x

Its about time, there is a starbucks on every corner in the UK and I'm pretty sure its the same in USA, they are the mcdonalds of coffee. Never mind the taste, its all about getting a cup of joe in a jiffy and getting back to work, thats why millions of poms and yanks drink starbucks coffee everyday.

Eh, I prefer Frisco. Two teaspoons per cup a day. I only have one cup usually. Funnily enough, I don't like Nescafé really, although lots of people swear by it. The other one I like is the one that house of coffee makes, in the yellow tin. Forgot what it was called now though.

Ag no, not another greedy multi billion American franchise. We have too many of them. Talking about Capitalism.

Wimpy's coffee and milkshakes are the best

We're not exactly spoiled for coffee around here, although I do love vida e caffe. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
