Starting a Local minecraft server

HI guys,

after having a go at playing minecraft online recently. i noticed that my pings wernt all that great. sortly after i decided i need a local server only to find that none of them were to my tasting or ill managed. i have therefore started working on hosting my own server and would like to know what others may think or can suguest to me. i dont have the list of plugins available as of yet but when i do put them together i will post them.

fom what i remeber: worldguard; essentials; infinate dispensors; fractitions; iconomy (i think or it might have been native to essentials)

any tips / hint / ideas would be welcome. will try get the server up soon that way i can get some feed back:D
 
Nice initiative. I love Minecraft :) What I know about running a server is minimal though - except that you are going to need some serious hardware. Good luck!

You dont need that serious of a machine to host a minecraft server. My 13 year old brother hosts one on weekends using his piddly little desktop machine
 
ive got an ubuntu server running at the moment. not crazy specs but it should do. 2GB Ram with a P4 @ 3GHz. thought about upgrading to a core2 @ 2.4Ghz but that might be a downgrade since minecraft servers dont run on multiple cores. will have to test it out a little.

the limiting factor at the moment will be afrihost's uncapped accounts :/ (for those that dont know: afrihost has implemented some pretty bad Qos policy on thier uncapped accounts which is shaping people to modem speeds like 5kb/s on certain things like downloads and torrents) gaming is however classified as a real time service so it shouldn't be a problem. will keep this post updated.

if all else fails ill host off my main desktop. as i don't use it so much because i know have a lappy :)

if anyone is keen to join my server drop me a pm with your username and ill put you on the white list. for now ill be sing a white list till i know the server is ready
 
HI Guys!

I finally have it up and running. For now I wont post too much info on it as its still work in progress but it is running and free for all. Please no griefing! no one likes griefers!

Fractitions
Vault
Infinite Dispensers
Worldedit (not that many will be able to use this)
Worldguard (your land will be safe)
Login Security
McMMO

I will make available a Team speak server for this server as well for those that prefer to hear ones voice rather than look at text

please note that this server is still in a so called Beta stage. This means there may be downtime and lag on it. This is also why there are only 20 slots.
