Steam account hacked

Sorry to hear that Wyvern :( happened to me a year ago when my steam was linked to my Yahoo account, but steam are very good in getting it sorted out relatively quickly.

Protip though.
Dont link gaming service accounts to Gmail, Yahoo or any other free hosted mail sites. A paid for, hosted mail account is the safest option. Sure its a pain in the uranus due to no webmail access, but its the safest option in terms of security.

Why does it seem that if someone's email gets hacked, it's a yahoo account? Mine got hacked and I know of a few friends who had their yahoo accounts hacked.

Don't link a "gaming service account" to an e-mail account that provides some of the best features, accessibility, storage and security (two-step verification either via phone or authenticator)? :wtf:

Protip: Many paid-for e-mail providers' accounts also get hacked. It doesn't exactly take a lot.

The only kinds of paid-for e-mail providers that can be thought of as "safer" are ones that forbid international IP ranges from accessing it, and then of course, you're welcome to tell me how useful that is to you when you're overseas :p

I'd also like to see just one paid-for provider that offers the same degree of features, reliability, security, flexibility and spam-filtering that Gmail has.

My feelings on this are simple: don't blame the provider for your own failure to protect your account.

I've used the same e-mail address for around five years with the same password. I've used it in WoW, Guild Wars, forums, everything under the sun. I've never had it compromised. I have, however, had two-step verification activated in the last year because I tend to subscribe to the "better safe than sorry" philosophy. I use it with my online banking, PayPal, Dropbox, Facebook, etc accounts as well and you guessed it: as safe as a bank vault.

I find it remarkably difficult to accept some broad generalisation about "free mail sites" when there are some amazing security features out there that paid-for providers just don't match up to.

So don't you go all "paid-for mail is the safest option in terms of security." Often, it really just isn't.

Thanks guys, still waiting to hear from steam tho :(

Weekend is a bad time. But don't worry, you will. I think it's likely you'll hear from them today.

Good luck, Wyvern...

I'm aware of that,my Blizzard account got hacked quite a few times when i was playing SC2.

I'm not even sure if it's still mine anymore because i haven't logged in to SC2 since last year.

My accounts banded cause of the hacks, couldnt give a rats ass to sort it out though.

If my steam account gets hacked then you'll see me jump, but not for 1 good game(SC2) and one crap one(D3).

I had my GMail account hacked a long time ago, and since my steam, mybb and mygaming accounts have gone funny. Have changed passwords on all of these, but it's still a scary thought....

I used to have all my passwords the same, I know fail. But now my email password is different from my steam password.

I always used to think that the only people that got their steam accounts hacked were kids who filled in their details on these sites claiming to give away free steam games.

Funnily enough i can still log in to my Blizzard account, can't believe i still have it after an entire year.

I have recently started getting scam emails about how i am apparently selling my WoW account and i have to verify my account via a link :p

Only account I ever had hacked once was my wow account. Then I went and bought myself an authenticator. The End.

Sorry but I can basically guarantee you that gmail's security FAR, FAR outstrips that of 99% of hosting providers.

Random lulz: I used the SWTOR authenticator for Android. Eventually flashed the ROM of my phone, and the app (obviously) stopped working. Of course, unlike the Blizzard smartphone app or the Google Authenticator, you have no recourse to solve the problem yourself other than by phoning in customer support. That was the last time I bothered to log into SWTOR.

Basically, if you're going to have an authenticator, HAVE A BLOODY SOLUTION FOR WHEN IT BREAKS/GETS LOST/STOPS WORKING THAT DOESN'T INVOLVE AN HOUR ON AN INTERNATIONAL CALL!

Stupid BioWare/EA/whomever >.<'

I have to say the dude who stole my steam was pretty interesting in his activities. He kept on trying to buy stuff, aka Team Fortress 2 crap, when there was no CC linked to the account.

At least I got my account back.
