Steam Dev Days Starts tomorrow - READ THIS!

This was the most intriguing thing I've read this year.

For those not in the know, Steam Dev Days is a discussion held between huge hardware developers and Valve to plan the future of the distribution service. It's closed to the press.

Some awesome snipets:

There is a panel about the basics of porting your game to Linux. There is a panel about moving your game to OpenGL. Nvidia will talk about reducing driver overhead. AMD will discuss its optimization and debugging tools and how to use them in Linux. The goal is to get developers started on Linux porting and development, and of course that means more games for SteamOS.

AMD, NVidia, Intel... Discussing Linux?!? What is this, 1991?

Microsoft has nothing to fear today, but the idea that Valve, AMD, Nvidia and Intel are getting together with developers to push for a future without Windows should scare the living hell out of them as they peer into the future.

Windows 9? More like Windows NEIN!

There will likely be demos of the Crystal Cove prototype hardware, and plenty of networking with some of the best minds working in modern virtual reality.

Say what!? I want to have John Carrmack's babies! Only if he makes Quakulus Rift Rocket Arena IV!

Don't underestimate Valve's will, or its ability to shape the future into its own image. Steam Dev Days may look like a friendly series of talks on a number of issues, but the reality is that it presents a very specific blueprint for the future, and it's a future that Valve will be happy to own.

Indeed, the PC is dead... :p

Dude if you are going to post an article then do it properly. Post the article as a whole or the opening paragraph and then your comments after the source links or in a separate post. I really don't want to be reading something to have you break the flow with some stupid one liner, I gave up half way thanks to those.

Chill guy. Is it really such a big deal?

I'm a bit worried about the beast that is Steam.

For instance a Steam machine sounds much better to me than any of the other consoles. So I will have a pc that plays games and a Steam machine that replaces my console and I will have all my games in one nice library.

Which makes Steam a monopoly. I mean I sometimes don't buy games because they won't be in my Steam library and I know many others who feel the same.

I just hope that Steam doesn't become the next company to turn evil. They've got so much power in the gaming world. It's scary.

It's not impossible, but steam isn't a publicly owned company and so they don't have to answer to any shareholders but themselves. This means that they get to decide how and where they invest there resources. Historically, valve have shown that they try to balance their business focus between a consumer-centric approach and what best suits their business. Or rather, the consumer-centric approach has been what has best suited their company. I don't think that will change any time soon, and if it does, I reckon they'll end up on the wrong side of Internet and consumer hatred and ultimately end up in a very bad position like eating is finding itself now, what with all the execs leaving.

Then kindly refrain from relying on amateur news posts on a gaming forum for your news fix.

I don't get paid to do this as I do it to share news and harbour the act of finding it to this forum, it's not my profession. Also, maybe if you actually paid any attention to any degree, you'd find that I link ALL sources and more at the bottom of all my news posts making the task an easy one if reading the actually source material is your game.

Steamboxes won't be replacing consoles or PC's. They might pull from those crowds, but from what I'm gathering their motive is not to replace but rather renew.

I, for one, enjoyed reading it that way. I wanted to read the whole thing too, so I clicked the link, and I was rewarded with the article just the way you described it.

I've often wondered about this. At what point might Steam implode? They are, for now, driving the market in what seems to be the correct direction with their renewed take on PC gaming, but monopolies are rarely good.. On the other hand, they only have a monopoly because no one else seems to be able to do it as well as them. It's not like there aren't any competitors, like Origin, UPlay, GMG, etc, it's just that they're shit compared to Steam, and the Steam fanbase is quite loyal.

That said, Steam sales! I, for one, welcome our new overlords.

Don't mind Ike_009, he's just increasing his activity by raging about people increasing their activity. :D

Agreed! For now im very happy with the way Steam is going... And if the keep going the way they are it will only benefit us, the consumers... Sony and Microsoft could really learn a lot from Steam... One thing that boggles my mind though, is when X-Box 1 said they were going to be all online etc, my initial thought was that they were trying to emulate the success of steam, and the got crucified for it... While Steam without an internet connection would be impossible...

I love the way Steam creates the perfect library set up for your games, and in a digital world it seems like the best way forward...

As long as games don't become exclusive to Linux/SteamOS and some exclusive to Windows then I'm all peachy. Last thing I would want is to have to build a 2nd PC for SteamOS or partition a drive to install it. Not that I think Valve would be stupid enough to alienate Windows like this though.
