Hi, and thank u in advance,

I am trying to stream movies across our home network to my iPad 2, I have come across several apps that will do this, but I was wondering if there was any free apps that did the same thing

I know Synology have a nice app feature with their NAS devices, although this probably doesnt work without a Synology NAS on the network. The software i think is proprietary. Perhaps maybe give it a bash and let us know?

Edit: Already checked it out and you must have a Synology NAS on the network https://itunes.apple.com/za/app/ds-video/id540949418?mt=8

Pity though, perhaps something to look for in the future?

I,m playing the media from my freenas server, but no idea how to push it, I did find oplayerhd lite, and then activated FTP service on the freenas, it kinda works, but the lite version has adds and is very unstable in that I keep losing network

PS3 Media server would be one way of doing it. iTunes also has a streaming service option over a local network.

And here's where you can start reading about setting it up.

I find the iTunes streaming network to be not that ideal. It works ok for music but it keeps not recognising my devices downstairs.

I think you're going to have to just pay some money to get an app here bud. $1 won't break you. Or there's always the other way...

Also if you want a media server experience try Plex. I like the simplicity of VLC myself, but Plex works quite well also.

thanks, will look into it, I don't mind paying, but what I hate is paying for something and 10 minutes later finding out there is a free app that does the same thing

I'm not sure if it's available on Apple devices, but I use BSPlayer on my android phone to stream video via wireless from my PC's shared folders. You can get the free version if you don't mind the adds that pop up when you pause a vid.

nope the ads don't bug me too much as long as they don't pop up during playback, and as long as they are family friendly adds, don't want to have to explain to my 8 year old what Viagra does, and why daddy doesn't need them

Lol! I've become so accustomed to these little pop-ups that I don't even check what they say anymore. There's normally just ads for tech thingies like phones and stuff, but they only pop up when you start the app or when you've paused so it's not too bad.
