Subscription wars: which platform's free games this February are best

Jan gr33nFIEND Tinman

Can whoever has contact with Marco Cocomello please make him read the comments in this thread:
http://mygaming.co.za/forum/showthr...on-Plus-vs-Games-with-Gold-a-value-comparison

I will explain it in layman's terms:
1. I pay R50 for something to the value of R746.00. Metacritic: 75.75%
2. I pay R149.00 for something to the value of R1668.00. Metacritic: 75.33%
3. I pay R190.00 for something to the value of R1354.00. Metacritic: 78.50%
4. I pay R5000.00 for something to the value of R5500.00. Metacritic: 88.00%

According to the articles the last option would be the best option because you get the largest value in return. But that's silly. It's illogical. And I please need someone to explain this to the writer because people are reading this here at MyGaming.

Value per rand calculation:
Value/Cost = Value per rand.

So
1. R14.92
2. R11.19
3. R7.12
4. R1.10

So in actual fact the best value this month again is the XBox Live Gold free games.

Here is a summary of all three offerings this month and how they compare. It seems that Xbox Live Gold members are getting the short end of the stick this month as the line-up, when looking at it from a value point of view, is lacking real value for money.
No please, that's not how it works. Please.

Surely that R5000 should be R500 :)

Also, good summary. I haven't really thought about it until now.

For the sake of the argument it must be R5000 to show that 4 doesn't win even though you get a bigger monetary value at the end, it doesn't mean that it's the best value for money.

Ah damn I misread that. Sorry :3
I feel silly now

Hehe no worries. At least you read it. The writer of the article doesn't bother to read the comments on his articles.

The forum? Peh, ain't nobody got time for that.

Post it in the Disqus comments section on the article page... It's a lot more public, but could damage the reputation of MyG somewhat if the general public also see the flaw in the writer's logic.

But I agree 100% with you that XBOX is by far the better value.

I must really change my Disqus picture. It somehow got hold of a photo when I linked an account to it and now I rarely post with it since it's got this ugly face linked to it. :)

Hey man!

I've flagged this with gr33nFIEND, he'll be in touch shortly to resolve.

I agree 100% with Solitude on this - the base logic is flawed. His approach to determining Value Per Rand makes much more sense.

In fact, I'd take it one step further and include the metacritic averages (or whatever review averages are being used) to generate a Best Performer score that includes "entertainment value" in it. Why else include them in the monthly analysis if you aren't going to use them in determining this arbitrary "best" level?

Best = ((Value / Cost) * Review Score)

Hi Solitude

Thanks so much for pointing this out and directing me to the best way to get to the best value per rand. I was going on the cheapest subscription compared to the total cost of the package, which I see now does not make sense. The PS+ titles to expire which greatly depreciated the value of the offer too, and Xbox Gold is dirt cheap, so it makes complete sense too. We are busy editing the article with credit to your math skills, and the lack of mine.

Awesome, thanks Coco! I like the series of articles but it was gnawing at me. :)

That's also a good idea! Wanted to rep but have to spread it around first.

No thank you! It also pointed out to me that PS+ is actually the best as it is R99 per month. This just pushed it over Xbox Gold's value to R16.68. Again, sorry for not replying on the original thread, things get a bit hectic at times.

Ah cool, I didn't realise that it's R99 per month for the PS+.

And don't worry, I understand about things getting hectic. :)
