It's been a full weekend after the release of the new Mario game. I spent so much time with it. and I'd like to share some thoughts and ideas about the game.
Firstly, Super Mario Odyssey is perhaps one of THE best games I've ever played in my entire life. It is perhaps the most polished, stylized, fun and addicting game I've played all year. When people come out and question the incredibly high ratings that Mario got, they need only play a few minutes to know this is something special. The previous Mario title I played was Super Mario 3. I've never played any 3D Mario game previously, so for me this game has been a revelation.
So firstly, the levels. The level design is fantastic! Each world feels distinctly different from the others, and each will challenge you in a different way. It makes sure that you never stagnate into the same play style, as each level demands different thinking and approach from you. The levels are also much bigger than I anticipated. It's not Zelda big, but more than big enough for you to spend hours exploring and trying to find all the various collectables.
Each level had 2 different coins you collect; the normal yellow coins and the level-specific coins. The coins are used to buy costumes and collectables, and the level specific coins are spent on costumes and collectables that you only can unlock on that level. Then there are the Moons that you can collect. These are used to advance to the next levels. During my initial playthough I found a shade under 200 moons. And that's alot, until you realise that there are about 800 of them...
Cappie is your hat that you use as a weapon to capture enemies and posses them or use as a bash. And the mechanic is amazing. It adds such a different and nuanced style to the game. You now have to think about which enemy to posses in order to solve a bunch of puzzles, or even take on boss fights.
The difficulty is a fairly low for the game, but it ramps up a lot closer to the end. The last 3 kingdoms are particularly vicious.
But here is the best part of the game; its fun! It's so much fun! It's an illegal amount of fun. It's a game that I feel is close to perfection because its what a game is supposed to be, absolutely fun to play.
Super Mario Odyssey is a game that you need. It itself is a really good reason to get a Switch.
