Takealot and Kalahari merge

Noooo!

Let's hope they retain the TakeAlot customer service side. Kalahari was terrible at customer service and deliveries.

Kinda looks like Takealot is absorbing Kalahari, so hopefully they will get Kalahari's customer service into shape

^^^ This.
With an increased scale of operation it may be a good thing for consumers. Or it could go the other way and will be remembered as one of the worst decisions in SA business history. We should know for sure this time next year.

Very bad new indeed. Lack of competition is not going to be good for the consumer at all...

The (larger) competition is there in the form of Amazon USA and Amazon UK.
<wild speculation>
Maybe Amazon is gearing up to launch a local store so Takealot and Kalahari are trying to consolidate market share before the launch?
Remember, you read it here first ;)

Ok, that would be awesome

Funny, I've actually heard someone mentioning that at the e-commerce expo a couple of weeks back. They reckoned one of the reasons Amazon doesn't allow Takealot to sell their stuff locally anymore, is because they are planning on coming here themselves.

Not from my perspective. The barrier to entry to buy from them does not put them in that same market space as for as the South African consumer is concerned.

Not sure this is such a good thing. Generally prefer Takealot as the few times I've used Kalahari there's usually some sort of issue and their contact centre is abysmal.

I really hope that this will prove to be a benefit for both themselves as well as the consumer(s); pricing structures, customer services etc.

This is terrible news, unless the wild speculation on the part of Mister 44 is correct and Amazon actually decides to bring some ops here. I don't think that it's too far-fetched considering that they already have a development wing here.

So will the Kalahari brand cease to exist ?

Say's here

Takealot CEO Kim Reid will manage the merged entity under the Takealot brand, together with his co-CEO and CTO Willem van Biljon.

Or will both websites continue to operate as usual ?

As I understand it, they will continue separately until after the festive season. So, Competition Commission willing, they will merge in the new year and trade as Takealot from that point. So no more Kalahari.

terrible terrible terrible news for consumer. less competition leads to monopolistic tendencies

Which will be good news for the smaller players like Raru, Rebel Tech, Wootware, Loot etc.
If Takeahari misbehaves, we'll have to support the other guys more.

Or better economies of scale could possibly mean good things for them and for the consumers. Although the way things tend to go in this country, I'm not sure it'll work out that way.

If Amazon does start a local store though, then it'll mean two bigger competitors, which can only be good for consumers.

When Takealot was still Take2, they weren't THAT competitive (until getting millions from their parent consortium). That wasn't too long ago either. Perhaps this is just to combat a possible Amazon presence in SA. I don't see why they wouldn't, because they have a footprint just about everywhere else and would then be competition straight off the bat.

That being said, if it isn't the case, it might be a problem for consumers, if they turn into dicks.
