Telkom set to upgrade ADSL speeds

Telkom is getting ready to upgrade its 512Kbps ADSL customers to 1Mbps in the near future

Telkom is looking increasingly ancient in the South African market with high ADSL pricing and relatively slow speeds on the low end.

While Vodacom, Cell C and MTN are rolling out 42Mbps HSPA+ networks across the country, many of Telkom’s ADSL subscribers have to be content with speeds of 384Kbps and 512Kbps.

MyBroadband quizzed new Telkom CEO Pinky Moholi about their ADSL prices in March, and she indicated that instead of dropping the price of ADSL in the country, they would rather looking at adding more value to subscribers like increasing broadband speeds and increasing data bundles.

At the time Moholi said that Telkom is looking at enhancing their DSL512 service, and information has now emerged that the company is looking at bumping up 512Kbps ADSL speeds to 1Mbps.

It is understood that while the speeds on Telkom's mid-level ADSL package will be doubled, the old pricing will remain.

Telkom spokesperson Pynee Chetty confirmed that Telkom is planning to upgrade DSL512Mbps to 1Mbps, but said that the company’s top executives still have to sign off the upgrades.

finally! only took them like fucking ages...

and yet it's gonna take a few ages more :(

better than nothing though

I hope they are also set to upgrade the IPC.

no help if we have 10000000000000000TB cables or 100000000000000000MB/S and the IPC can only realistically cater for say 10 000 with 4 meg lines.

I think its up from 10000 4mb lines to about 20000 LMAO... kidding, but I thought they would upgrade the 384kb line also to atleast 512KB. but i guess wouldn't make finacial sense cause people will still skip the 1mb line to go for the 4/10mb option cause of price difference.

Best upgrade route would have been:

384kb = 1mb
512kb = 2/4mb
4mb = 8/12mb

Atleast for the meantime.

384 should now get the bump to 512 for the interim. then 512 should fall away and 1mb should be the min...

Still, not much worth if there is not decent infrastructure. I suppose telkom IS going to ride the copper till the very last breath.

Ok I havn't seen the price plan for rental in a while and telkoms website is impossible to navigate
so Could some one list the Different
Line rental prices as they are currently , incl phone line rental and no ISP data costs

I just want them to offer uncapped already :mad:!!

I believe they said its not going to happen yet, maybe when WACS bandwith becomes available we may see something. If i recall something to do with only 3% of their users exceeding thier capped.

I just think telkom doesnt see that people have more than one account... Telkom is expensive to top up with.

As usually 384 people get stiffed ,
well everyone , its telkom were talking about , but still , the mere fact that they still seem to think that 384kbps is fast , is ridiculous.
Telkom should only have 1mb/4mb/8mb packages .

At least you guys get Telkom lines, I've been in an area for 9 months now still waiting on Telkom to come install my line, I've had to resort to Iburst to have connectivity.

This will not happen anytime soon, they have too much of a monopoly in SA and the level of current competition just isn't substantial!

Sadly all is true :(, I exceed my 9gig cap but 6-10gig every month. I tried moving over to another ISP but I just had endless problems with both...

*sigh*

Didnt they upgrade plenty of 4MB lines last year to 8MB and then realised the infrastructure can't handle it ? i remember them causing lots of synching issues for some people who got bumped to 8MB

They are doing this so there is a reason to upgrade to "512" since most people never both since its such a small gap.
fusking twats :mad:

well for those that are intersted the 1 meg is now running and I have upgraded my mweb to 1 meg as well
