I've had enough with this crap now, seriously. I've been having kak with my DSL line for months now and I just feel like I'm getting nowhere.

Just have a look at this:

Constant ping to www.telkom.co.za.

22% packet loss and high latency. After about the 3rd time I reported it, they fixed it. Worked for a month and now it's starting again. First time the lady tells me there maintenance on the exchange, but it turns out that this is not the case as the maintenance only starts next week. Just now I had to explain, over the phone, to the techie, how to do a constant ping. "So that the guy that comes to test the line knows how to do it".

WTF?! I feel like I should phone them and ask them to fsking reimburse me for al the time I'm not able to use my DSL line. How would I go about this? I'm thinking of phoning the Telkom Direct shop and explaining it to them but I'm just so sick and tired of this shit. Has this happened to anyone else?

Who is your ISP?

Telkom/Afrihost/Vox

In this instance I was using a Telkom account. They're all the same in terms of latency and packet loss. Trust me dude, I've done my super extensive troubleshooting already. This DSL circuit is thoroughly screwed. They also don't want to tell me if the DSLAM is running over capacity. They could at least tell me the size of the link going from the DSLAM to the exchange and if it's running within it's capacity.

Good luck getting telkom to fix the problem. Took me 2 years of constant calling, reporting and escalating of faults and plus going into the telkom direct store and many Top guys before they finally fixed my line.

I wasn't even the only one with a fault the whole area was :p

I have been experiencing high latencies over the weekend, I never had any real problems with my line over the years that I have been with Telkom. I do not know what the problem is. I ping Telkom and Saix with a latency of 180 - 200 ms. Internationally and locally my latencies have skyrocketed.

I play League of Legends with a few friends and usually I play with a latency of 220ms but now I am averaging around 700ms. I did a full virus scan, restarted my router and made sure any and all updates are cancelled/paused before joining another game.

Anyone in Cape Town experiencing any performance decreases?

Sounds like your exchange is congested on weekends. Are you mostly in a residential area?

I stay in Bellville, I never had this problem before though. It is odd because my latency will be fine and then suddenly it is like I am buffering a youtube video in the background. I do not think it is my exchange that is congested, I had a late night session with my friends last night at around 02:00 AM where the problem persisted. :wtf:

Well do a tracert when it happens it will tell you if it is a timeout problem or exchange/dslam problem and then do one when it is working perfectly fine.

I have just decided to go to the Telkom direct shop as soon as possible and I am going to UNLEASH THE FURY in that shop, ask them to compensate me for all the fucking downtime and then cancel my line or lodge a complaint with ICASA if they don't fix this shit. I'm really just sick and tired of this "service" provider. All they're providing me with is a fucking headache and huge frustration.

Some people don't mind taking it up the arse from Telkom but I've had enough of this shit. Reading 50 threads about how shitty Telkom is on mybroadband was just the final straw for me now.

Sorry for hogging your thread, seems like my latency returned to normal now.

Anyways good luck, some say if you go to a Telkom shop they actually help you. The call centres are just a waste of time and a test of patience.

Don't get your hopes up regarding the store - I went in ready to cause havoc after waiting 7 weeks for my ADSL line to be fixed. All they did was call the Call Centre for me as they don't deal with faults - only sales. I only found success when I ambushed one of the technicians working in the area and got him to check when someone would be coming to fix the line. Good luck... you'll need it.

Hmm the telkom store got me into contact with a technician in PMB so don't get why they said to you that they only do sales. Maybe the people lazy?

Similar situation here. Our adsl has been off since Friday afternoon. This is the fourth time this year. The last time it took them 3 weeks to fix the problem. This time I wont be accepting that. I couldn't even play dead island this weekend. :(

Tooks, as a curiosity what line speed do you have?

I upped mine from 384 to 4mb and had loads of issues. Managed to sort it out fast tho once web africa checked that it wasnt their fault. Phoned Telkom and reported the fault they ended up dropping our line speed to 3mb and we had a techie sent to the house becaused we complained that the line connecting to the house is dodgy - of the two wires one was so stretched out that it was hanging about 2m's below the top line. They sent a techie that same afternoon and fixed the line outside and with the drop in speed my connection has been stabled.

It's a 4mb. Last time a tech came out, he replaced the cables at the distribution point as well. Then went to the DSLAM and reset the port manually. So I don't think it's a congestion issue, it must be software related. But hey, who am I to tell them what the problem is

So this morning, I get an SMS on my cell saying fault has been resolved. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!! <---- Raging laughter of frustration

When I spoke to the "guy" while logging the fault, I specifically asked him for the tech to PHOOOOONE me when he does anything because I know what's wrong and how they fixed it last time. I said to the oke "Write that down, put that in your ticket, please." I asked him more than 3 times to do that. Guess what? Noone phoned me. Just got an sms saying it's resolved which I know it's NOT because during the day it doesn't fsck out that much. Sigh...I hate this shit.

Oh hell, I've tried to get them to phone me a bunch of times. Usually at least just to tell me what day a tech is due to come to my house, but no matter how much you tell them that they HAVE to phone, it always ended up that I called them again to ask when the tech was coming only to be told that they were already there yesterday but no-one was home, so I need to re-schedule. Then I would blow a fuse and yell at them for a while, but nothing ever changes.

The exchange is congested, I'm in Bellville as well and there are a lot of recent complaints. I've been fighting with Telkom to get it fixed but it looks like we are stuck with it until at least Nov/Dec.

For me the latency is fine during business hours, but after about 6pm till about 4am the latency is horrendous.

Well according to Web Africa a tech has been assigned to look into our line issue. Whether or not anything gets resolved today is another story entirely...

/hugs Tooks

Take a deep breath and then go yell at them some more.

See I was just suprised that they fixed our issue so fast. Apparently I live juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust 5 blocks to far from the whatchamacallit to get 4mb. . .

Since we upgraded the line the phone was crackling so badly that we couldnt use it to phone anyone. And since we live in a cell tower shadow unless your standing on your head on the 4th brick to the left of the swimming pool and dont breathe you can use your cell . . . I ended up phoning from work.

Do you have a POTS filter on your phone line? That's supposed to take the interference from the ADSL out of the phone line
