The 5 biggest video game launches to date

I can't remember where I read it, but apparently more than 20 Million unique users play Call of duty every month.
That is one insane statistic!! Its a global power house..a Phenomenon!!

The only thing I can't stand is the community..not all of them but around 40% of the online community are..I can't even think of the word...
Its seems to be getting worse and worse...Parents should not let their kiddies play this..as it makes the experience of online play so unbearable, I've wanted to rage quit xD

I reckon diablo 3 is going to put up some very big numbers when it finally gets released .
I suspect though that the really high numbers will come once diablo 3 is available on consoles.

yea call of duty really is winning in everything. im just so tired of the MW series though, sure good story line, good game but its getting stale now..... I also think D3 will probably be the biggest seller of 2012 and perhaps of all time. To me its the most anticipated game of the last decade.

I actually thought The Sims would have been there since it is one of the most popular games around.

Call of Duty filling up the top 3 slots of this ranking comes as no surprise to me. They have a massive franchise and a HUGE pool of players who are still playing all of the current generation console's iterations of the game. Grand Theft Auto have the same type of momentum with every single game that they release. People have high expectation for each release Rockstar makes in this franchise, and they seem to be delivering. Looking at how popular the previous games where in the series, I have no doubts that GTA V will have a hugely successful launch.
Halo being on that list is also very understandable, because it can be called the flagship Xbox 360 exclusive game out there.

I see many people in this thread expects Skyrim to be in the list. I can kind of see why it is not. I know it is a huge game (I myself love it), but I notice that many people buy it post fact instead of on launch. An example of that is: The people who are in this office all own the game, but I was the only one to buy it straight away.

Agree, does not make sense, what about BF3, something like over 5 million sold, Skyrim, over 3.5 million sold...
Whose statistics are they using?

IMO I reckon the gaming industry is probably pulling it shitloads of money for the global economy, obviously not as high as many other things but I'd say as gamers we have to be at least sitting in top 5 when it comes to entertainment and the amount of money we make those companies with supporting their products. :)

I can agree with that. The gaming industry has surpassed the movie industry. It just has to surpass the music industry to become number 1.

I would really like to see these stats for PC game sales only, would be interesting and think that it might just be a little different.
But there is no real surprise with this.

Aren't MMO's played more than FPS online?
I would have thought that something like WOW had a huge number of subscribers, or even Guild wars

WOW didn't have a huge fan base back when it was released. Since this is a thread about the size of the game launch, ie how much £££ it made on launch, other games, like Halo and COD, take the lead. MMO's generate £££ over time, not right off the bat.

I think they take it based on release day sales or something to that effect.
If an old game like, lets say tomb raider 1 were to suddenly sell 20 million copies 15 years later it still wouldn't make this list.

CoD's a good game, but it has no innovation that I'm looking for in a game. They know what sells well, and they're "sticking to their guns". The main differences between all the games is the storyline and graphics. But that's my personal opinion, I still love CoD, but I also want to get a game that's innovative.
