The Avengers..

The Avengers: what can I say about it? In the words of Shania Twain, "That don't impress me much."

So they're serving up Thanos [derivation: Thanatos, i.e. Death [Greek]] in the inevitable Avengers 2 movie. I wonder whether we can expect Drax the Destroyer too? And Moondragon?

Avengers did nothing for me: it raised not a single goosebump.

Yes, it was loud, the usual high-budget smörgåsbord of visual effects was very much in evidence, and there were a few attempts at humour, but I felt that the film was too drawn out [translation: I felt bored.] I am by no means a film buff or literary critic , and rely on gut feel as a measure of the movie. It didn't. Move me, that is.

The Avengers, for me, delivered one of the most enjoyable movies so far this year. Joss Whedon delivered some of his best work, both as writer and as director since Firefly & Serenity. He manages to bring the character from not 1 but 4 movies and years of comics to screen brilliantly. With all the characters except Hawkeye and Black Widow having had 1 or, in Iron Man's case, 2 full films to establish them there was no need to explain any origins or anything, even the bad guy was already established in Thor and the deus ex machina of it all, the tesseract, was explained in Captain America. What this meant was the Whedon was free to do what he does best, character interactions and relationships & witty dialogue. There are several scene where if you didn't burst out laughing there has to be something wrong with you. Yes it relied heavily on special effect but none of it felt out of place in the film. While the plot lacks the drama of something like The Dark Knight it did deliver what it set out to do, give us one hell of an awesome super hero flick, and the chance to watch Thor and Hulk go at it.

As I said, I'm no film critic/buff. I probably wouldn't notice the nuances of plot, character development, or be able to distinguish good acting from bad unless they were pointed out to me. :P

My lol for the day.

I think you are being just a little harsh on the other posters, many of whom know their stuff. Omegafenix, for example.

I do admit to some spontaneous laughter at certain points in the film....but it just seemed to take extra long to move from exposition to denouement-though knowing that a sequel is on the way does make the climax less....well....climactic-but that is beside the point.
 
if you guys didn't like this then , your lacking the Fun aspect of life.
If we want to get critical , and move past the oooh it was awesome statements that can be explored.
Why is it awesome , well nothing like this has ever been done before so for that they get extra points for giving Audiences something fresh , you may argue the whole team coming together thing has been done before , but where The Avengers differs is
3 1/4 of the movie wasnt spent trying to get us to like these characters. In their own movies some soared some sank but in this movie they all excelled. The story although seeming simple , gave you a layered look on what individuality is and the humour was placed appropriately to hi light aspects that gave it as much realism as a comicbook movie could muster cause these moments make it relate-able to the Audience.

If this didnt impress you and your trying to be critical the consider the dynamics it displayed and how most movies fail at bringing stars together and allowing you experience each ones performance in a way that it all feels satisfying.

CGI , ACTION , direction is all top notch on this Movie. and it seems the rest of the world agrees with me on this point ( yes the same rest of the world that agreed TDK was a masterpiece )

For anyone to say it isnt good means that instead of wearing 3D glasses they were wearing blindfolds with earplugs and was looking the wrong way in the movie.
 
Can't believe this thread is still going LOL!

Fact of the matter is, Marvel have done something so brilliantly that no other studio has done it before, and they've pulled it off.

They've taken a universe and merged characters together flawlessly, DC Comics would FAIL if they tried to do this.

I really hope that at some stage, Marvel can purchase the rights back for Spiderman, and he joins The Avengers. And yes this does happen for a brief stint in the comics.

I don't get this whole "not being done before" of course this has been done before:

First one I think of is The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

or what about The Avengers-Earth's Mightiest Superheroes ?

Giant "flying worms" or machines destroying buildings... done
Alien invasion ...done
Getting a team together ...done
Team not working together ...done
Super heroes ...done
<insert> ...done

It's not about missing fun in life. It really felt like I've seen this all before with a lot of lolling. However the flick isn't the end of the world, but it just didn't move me. Compared to the three musketeers or tin tin, I would rather watch Avengers again.

I lol'ed HARD, but I watched it in 2D. 3D is waste if flick is not specifically shot in 3D, but rather bastardized to 3D during post production.

It was interesting to watch even though we all knew what would happen in the end. It was a masterstroke of editing, because the movie managed to give everyone ample screen time and explore some of their hopes and fears etc. It's a movie to entertain and not Sense and Sensibility so take if for what it is.
 
I'm also another person that enjoyed the movie and this is coming from someone who's usually fussy around these type of movies(Thor and Cap America were so-so for me). It did however feel like there were a couple of parts that were dragged and even though Cap is supposed to be the leader of the group, somehow it also felt like Stark was taking most of the limelight. Still think Evans was the wrong person to play Cap's role but yeah that's just me. On the other hand Mark Raffulo was perfectly(finally) cast for Hulk and apparently there's talk of another Hulk movie with him in it(Thanos?).

All in all I think the movie delivered. I don't think there was anything original about the story itself or type of characters, we've all probably seen a movie with similar theme but the way they told it and brought the heroes to "live" was really outstanding.

And yes, you don't have to go see it in 3D, well that's if you can find a movie place showing it in 2D. I think only the big cinemas show both with some of the small ones opting for the 3D version. Read on MyBroadband that this usually changes after the first week, something about Numetro having limited 3D versions that they have to share/swap with other cinemas after the 1st week of release.

For us south africans (and others that got to see the film open on the 26th or after) there's only one extra credits scence that pops up mid credits
for the americans that got the film a week later, they got ANOTHER end credits scene

my gf took me to watch the movie on condition we watch it in 3D...waste of money since there were very VERY few 3D scenes.personally i loved the movie.however the hulks personality changed a bit too much from me..he went from being afraid of everything, to a dude who was pretty cocky...like 2face from batman

being the marvel fan i am,i let all that slide and enjoyed them fighting together(and with eachother :P)

The 3D effects were there, but not all that noticeable. Truth Be Told, my eyes were adjusting to those glasses throughout pretty much the whole duration of the movie. I did notice a lot of Depth of Field being used.
 
I enjoyed the film quite a lot (I may be biased as I'm somewhat of a Marvel fanboy...)
anyway, as a whole it was an awesome film, I'd recommend it to those that love the superhero genre, or to those that want to watch a great film
3D is prob not required (although watching in 3D means the movie is in HD quality which is nice)
The little whendon bits in the film were awesome and make the film believable i think

go watch it! :D

Just watched it this Saturday in 3d. 3D effects weren't that good and the glasses messed up the color but 3D movies being only R10-15 more expensive, Went with 3d.
Pretty much a typical action/thriller movie, still enjoyed it tho :P
