The Bible Chronicles: Call of Abraham - Are Gamers Ready for Religious Games?

Phoenix Interactive Studios today launched a Kickstarter campaign for Christian-themed single-player PC RPG called Bible Chronicles: Call of Abraham, a new game that aims to "stir hunger for God's word."

In the game, you don't play as Abraham himself, but rather a fictional member of his caravan who embarks on an adventure that culminates in the Battle of Siddim. Throughout the game, players will journey through ancient cities like Hebron, Ur, and Memphis.

The game will also depict one of the most well-known Bible stories concerning Abraham, when he was commanded by God to kill his son Isaac only to be stopped at the last second by an angel of the Lord.

According to Phoenix Interactive Studios, keeping true to the Bible for Call of Abraham was very important. To that end, the developers formed an advisory group of local pastors and ministry leaders who made sure what was represented in the game did not stray from Biblical writing.

"We're using Kickstarter to realize our vision, and that's to put a copy of this game--Bible Chronicles: Call of Abraham--into every Christian home that's out there," designer Martin Bertram said. "Our hope is that this game will stir hunger for God's word in everyone that plays this game."

If you've read the Bible, you know the text is replete with violence. In Call of Abraham, violent acts can only be pursued if they are honorable, developers said. What's more, when there is a "better" alternative to violence, players will be rewarded for finding and choosing it.

If Call of Abraham receives the $100,000 it's looking for on Kickstarter, the game will launch around Thanksgiving 2014. Right now, the game is in development only for PC, but "Xbox" and "PlayStation" versions will be released if funding hits $250,000.

So what does everyone think? Are we ready for games to preach the word of God? If the comments on the article are anything to go on... it doesn't look like it. I can't recall any Bible-themed titles ever having released.

There have been loads of Christian games. Even a Christian FPS.

Considering I don't see any guns being held to peoples heads to buy or play Call of Abraham (lol) it doesn't really change my life in any way.

I am not entirely sure what I just read. I didn't know Kickstarter was around, making games in 1998?

I think this is going to be a tremendous flop and might even be a candidate for the 'Worst game' thread we have going on in the forum.

My opinion here has nothing to do with my religion, though...it just looks terribad.

The problem is they always look shoddy. I think if they had to make it like a 3xA title and lose a tiny bit of the 'preachy' aspect, they would be ok to play. I mean, the bible has some funky stories that would translate well into games. It's all about the approach.

Give this man a bells.

Basically what i was thinking.

They could make a cool Samson game. When you regenerate health your hair gets longer, there's potential there I think.

Loving the ideas yeah. I'm not particularly religious myself but there's no denying the bible has some epic tales. I think developers would be concerned about taking the risk of making a AAA title with religious themes though. There's always the threat of controversy if you alter storylines etc and endless killing would also probably be shunned upon in a game like that, and a game without lots of killing these days finds it hard to be successful.
