The Decline of Strategy Gaming

Nobody has time for a 4 hr game anymore.

I'm not sure I understand. What do you mean by this?

Plus the AI is an issue. *None* of the RTS games have an AI that plays on a level playing field as you do (not counting chess). If you don't help the AI with extra resources & no fog of war then they're useless.

Well, that comes part and parcel with a strategy game. No AI can come close to a human player, so it's necessary to let them cheat and give them certain gimmicks in order for them to present any type of challenge to players. As an example, take 4X games. Many players always wonder why AIs randomly declare war on them for no apparent reason, but almost every 4X game is reliant on timers for their AI. There are literally timers ticking down the time until an AI declares war on a player, and certain events/circumstances add time to that timer, but doesn't change the fact that inevitably that AI is going to declare war on you.

Some games have very good AI that do a pretty good job of mimicking human gameplay (AI War is a very good example, where the AI will generally exploit your weaknesses and do as much as possible to screw you over), but the problem will never go away until they develop AI that is self-aware and can think for itself.

But I think his point is it hasn't improved enough over time. And all your points may be valid, but not for this discussion. He is simply saying why he thinks RTS aren't that popular anymore, we are aware that there are limitations. But whether you enjoy a game or not has nothing to do with limitations of tech. You only care that the AI is rubbish.

But my word thanks for reminding me about the AI declaring war in Civ, I flipping hate that in Civ. It does seem better in Civ 5 though.

Sometimes I wish Men of war would "cheat" less.

Dam some missions are a bich to complete/win.

Wow I miss RTS games ! The spectacular age of empires 2 was my first ever real game and I spent 6 hours on each of the first few missions building up the entire map before I squashed the enemy! Battle for Middle Earth 2 is another classic, especially the create a hero for Lanning.

Dawn of War, Warcraft 3 , Metal Fatigue. replayed that NAG demo for months. I recently replayed Battle Realms. A relatively unknown japanese drama type game. where you had to individually train units from peasants to basic warriors and so on until elite levels (normally samurai or Ronin).

I would really enjoy seeing a new one. I don't really much go for Medevil or anything with too much Micro management. The base building and economy was actually quite enjoyable. It is quite niche though but if peopel can spend hours paying to play Eve Online I don't see why a strategy game can't be successful now. Give those kids some attention spans dammit!

I will never forget the days me and my friends would play a single match of Supreme Commander or LOTR BFME2 for hours trying to find a way to beat your opponent while not pissing them off too much

So does anyone got anhavey recommendations for any great recent RTS? I'm more a fan of the ancient/fantasy or sci-fi types than the ww2/modern warfare ones.

From a personal view, I've spent a lot less time in strategy games due to time constraints (also less forum time). :(
Also many have mentioned about the consoles, RTS just doesn't blend well with controllers.

However, in the wake (or dead) of things, more turn-based strategy games have popped up. Many games now have "tactics" added as suffix and made into TBS e.g. Arma Tactics.
TBS work quite well with controllers and touch screens since the user only controls one object at a time through a grid layout.

One I will always recommend is AI War: Fleet Command. It's one of the best RTS games to be released in recent years, but most people never end up playing because they can't look past the 2D graphics. They miss out, but it probably doesn't matter much because if they're that shallow this game will likely go over their heads anyway. :p

The basic premise is that AI machines have taken over the galaxy and basically wiped out almost all of humanity. The AI is now in hibernation, and you're all that's left to oppose it. The key being that you should try and keep the AI unaware of you for as long as possible, because the more you attack them the more aware they get and the bigger threat they pose.

It really is one of the best strategy games money can buy, because it actually requires a lot of thought on the player's part instead of him just memorizing build orders. If you start taking planets over too early, you risk the AI starting a full-scale invasion again and wiping you out while you're still weak. What is amazing about it is that the AI is also very adaptive and learns from you. If you try a certain strategy once, and then try it again the AI would likely have come up with a plan to counter it the second time. Similarly, the AI scouts out your planets and checks for weak spots in your defense and strategy and then takes advantage of that to hit you hard. If you've got a lot of defensive structures around one wormhole, but leave another less defended, the AI might circle around the galaxy and try to enter your planet from the other wormhole.

It's really an amazing game and it's highly unlikely that you'll win your first few scenarios, because the key to playing is to build up your forces so that by the time the AI realises what a threat you pose and they start waking up their overlords, it's too late for them. Very few games give you the satisfaction that you get when finally beating an AI in AI War.

Warcraft 3 was the greatest game ever - excellent story, variation in campaign missions, 4 different factions. . .

But like what has been said earlier, people want instant satisfaction and that is why moba's are popular, you control 1 unit and then go out and do your own thing in a team enviroment. . .

You can't go wrong with StarCraft 2

I've watched a lot of streams and that. Played the campaign a bit! I do like it, but the super competitive environment of it puts me off a little!

Age of Empires Online looks intriguing to me, I tried installing it before, but had some sort of glitch with Windows Live that wouldnt let me play it! Very annoying. Anyone play that?

I love those base building rts games. Every now and then I re-install C&C generals, they`re making a new one, hope they don`t screw it up.
