The different types of gamers

Thanks for this DieGrootHammer, I think it's a pretty good list.

As you guys might realise, I'm quite new to this forum but enjoy following some of the stuff you guys get up to.
I think it's a very cool community - well done on creating it and kudos for keeping it going.

Thought I'd just share the type of gamer I believe myself to be...a hybrid between Core, Hardcore and Multiplayer.
And all of it is experienced on PC. Master race meme anyone? Ok, I will :)

Though I am happy to admit that FIFA and sport games in general are better on the console / with a controller.

A counter argument could be; if someone enjoys watching series or movies, would you call or label them appropriately? Would they then become a Movie-er or something?

A counter-counter would be that my girlfriend is most definitely a Horror-fan moviegoer, so that could be seen as a parallel to the different types of gamers. You like different genres of movies/series.

I am juged on my merit and not on looks, gender.

You're always juged on your spelling too! :D

But just because I enjoy mountain biking, does that make me a mountain biker?

If 'Hammer enjoys playing golf for recreation, does that make him a golfer? I don't think so as it is not his profession, as is I am not a mountain biker.

So if I like mountain biking, playing games, watching movies and I am a software tester; does this then make me a mountain-biker-gamer-moviegoer-software-tester guy?

Depends how into mountain biking you are, just as how you need like a minimum interest in gaming to be considered a gamer...or enjoy playing golf to be a golfer. Generally once you are starting to spend money on something I think the label applies. Bought a decent mountain bike and shoes/gear etc.? yea you're a mountain biker. Bought that sweet 3 Wood for when on a par 4? Yea you're a golfer. Profession has zero to do with it. I'm a gamer 100% but I don't earn a cent from it.

So yes yes yes :)

EDIT: And as you put it, being 1 thing doesn't exclude you from being another. Thats where I think the "profession" label comes into it and muddies the water. Sure if you're a professional golfer you're labelled a golfer. But you can still be a gamer too :D

Glad you enjoyed it. Also you bring up an interesting though. I see a lot of people answer they are hybrid types of gamers. Now I'm kinda thinking that you would be a different gamer depending on the type of games you play. I wonder if there is room to be classified as both a core and a hardcore gamer...Interesting thought indeed

Yes I totally agree. If you look up any word with the suffix "er" you don't get the definition of the profession of the person doing that action. For example, the dictionary definition of a "golfer" is someone that plays golf, nothing to do with their profession. And absolutely, you can be a lot of "er" words. Labeling yourself as one thing does not necessarily exclude you from other labels.

But, then again, you don't have to call yourself a gamer whatsoever. If you don't like it, that's ok. It's absolutely your choice. Some people like the ideas and factors that comes with a label, some people don't. Thank goodness we are not all the same, otherwise the world would be such a boring place.
