The evil of online

Nice read. I must say I'd rather jump online into my favorite online FPS game, play by the rules and aim to do well, or rank up some decent kills. It's a far more enjoyable experience online when everyone shares this mentality, instead of the typical "OMG AWP'ers, get a life"

I will admit that access to the internet killed LAN's, and games like Warcraft3 and DOTA pioneered this trend IMO.

Quite honestly and very sadly, nothing will ever change this degradation of how people treat other people online. What truly scares me though is when will this start pouring over into everyday real life social interactions? Eventually being a doos online will become so ingrained into our consciencenous, that we will start being doos' in real life too. And it will happen eventually.

As for people being idiots online in-game, I barely register it anymore. I play online and about 95% of the time with Teamspeak so that I can chat to my mates whilst we play. I've said before that it is almost not about what you play, more who you lay it with. If I wanted to play in silence like that, I would simply play against some bots instead.

Sometimes though it is hard to ignore some of the infantile commentary and also hectic fun to antagonise these juveniles. Be it harping them something back or simply ignoring them. My utter favourite though is to spot the one who hates nade launchers the most and hound them until they rage quit. It gives me great satisfaction to know I got under his/her delicate skin. Yeah, they become irritating, but if it wasn't meant to be part of the game, it wouldn't be there. Nade launchers that is. Sadly these kids aren't meant to be there, but they are despite age restrictions. That is another topic altogether. There is actually a discussion on about that on these forums. Something to do with California Law or so.

Any case, best advice is to not let some schmucks out there spoil what can really be lots of fun for you. Ignore them as far as you can. When you no longer can ignore it, respond, but don't stoop to their level.

Well mostly I've just been playing 3 games online. CoD4 and 5 and company of heroes. CoD4 I mostly play Igame and if some nitwits shows up and keeps bitching about grenade launchers or whatever elce, I can just send a quick e-mail and never hear from them again.

CoD5 I can only play the old SGS tdm server, there I just don't pay attention to the chat much, they don't like my tank, they can leave.

CoH, Well there I've so far only met really nice people, incompetent with tactics, but nice.

MMmmmm company of heroes. i havent played that online but did alot of lanning with that game. i would love to get back into playing it again as my friends started get bored of it and didnt want to play it anymore. Are there local servers and if yes can u name them? Thanks

Yoh - I dunno if I'm showing my age by posting this but does no one remember the Arcades and the scores there? Damn, I remember the bragging in school that used to go on with regards to Mortal Kombat (2 & 3) scores, how long they played against challengers etc. It's always been like that and the ONLY thing that's changed is people's attitudes to worse players than themselves. In the past, people accepted that you can still enjoy a game even if you were bad at it, now it's like "wtf u plyng dis game if u so sht, fkn noob". All that said... trashtalk is part and parcel of gaming, whether it be a CoD session or a game of British Bulldog during breaks at school. It's the invisible line that people are not aware of anymore due to the anonymity of the internet that is really at fault. Earlier you'd get a sound punch in the face if you overstepped certain boundries, but online... who can touch you? The guy who lives 500/1000/10000 kms away? "rofl, i fkn pwnt u po3s n u suck, n wat u gn do nw fkn n00b?"

E-mail an admin and make sure you never get back that R400 again. ;)

Uhm... It's an RTS, there aren't any servers.

Then how do u play it online! If iam sounding like a noob i guess iam one. As i dont play many RTS's and last one i played was warcraft 3 and that had a server. So iam guees its COH has a p2p system for online play then?

Densweep I agree and I also feel it is already happening.

Developers are giving us the tools to do this since, well, it sells. Antagonism sells so instilling it in their playerbase in a competitive game makes sense to a degree (there is more to this however). This then breeds certain habits within people, but luckily it is still somewhat controlled when dealing with someone face-to-face. Over the phone or email is another story.

I am forced to group-up with random people often getting the full experience of idiocy online. I think I have developed a thick skin but I am sure that even the thickest skin gets cracked from time to time (mood depending). I just wish that adults, yes I said adults, acting like this would see how immature they are. Kids acting this way makes sense, but even then they are starting it at younger ages and taking it into their late 20's and 30's. Men (I should say boys) lack an initiation process to bring their psyche into manhood so they remain boys for far too long. Something needs to give in the Western world.

+1 for the article
+100 for the small comic :D

I LOL'ED so hard last night! I was playing BO and some kid (Couldn't be older 15) was dissing this guy who, by the sound of his voice, much older than this twerp. Anywho I joined joined the DM just before halfway and this kid was dissing this guy by saying things like:

Twerp - "What the fnck?! You virgin!"
Guy - "A vrigin (He then asks his pal what a virgin is dripping with sarcasm)?"
Twerp - "Have you ever slept with anyone besides you mom?"
Guy - "LOL"
Twerp - " Shut up you stupid fncking virgin"

Then they twerp goes onto loose the game and start saying it was lag and that the opposite team (With the older guys) were using cheap tactics i.e using rpgs...

I lol'ed so hard! The twerp before he left started flaming me! I lol'ed even more :D!

Really, its not online gaming that encourages "asshattery", but the internet. Specifically the anonymity and being safe from consequence from what you do and say. The competitive side of games does tend to highlight it a bit more, but games are certainly not the root cause. Forums, chat rooms and really any online platform where your identity is hidden are all filled with asshats.

My view on it is contrary to what most people like to believe, I think a lot of people are not "good" by nature. If they can get away with it they will do it (eg. piracy, trolling, asshattery in games and the way people behave on the roads in SA), and what better place to get away with things that would cost you your front teeth in real life than the internet.

Online can still be a great experience, but you have to be willing to look around a bit for decent people to play with or find a well administrated/moderated server and community to play with.

The majority of players nowadays play only for themselves. (I am speaking about public servers here, I assume the article is about online gaming on public servers). Despite the fact that most people play team-based games, they usually play only for themselves, not caring how the team is doing.
They will sit in the back of the base sniping at the enemy when the game requires you to complete objectives. In BF2 they would insist of either flying while their team looses, or wait patiently at the hanger to fly while the team is loosing, telling everyone that they are the best pilot out there, they just need to get a plane, then you will see. When the team lose, it was because they were playing with a bunch of noobs, or playing against hackers, its never their fault.
Its all about the K/D ratio for these people, which they publish everywhere for all to see, proud of themselves and hugging themselves to sleep every night.
The whole problem started when personal stats were introduced. But this was what the community wanted, and quite frankly its interesting to watch your own performance and see whether you are improving, but it introduced the stats junkies, people who play simply to be better than everyone else, even though they are playing team games. Very few stats indicates the player's actions other than combat. I wonder if people will play a game that doesn't award any points for kills, only reward you if you manage to complete an objectives.

Then of course there's the attitude of, I bought the game and therefore I am allowed to tell you how to play your game. Because how dare you play the game different from me, preventing me from being as good as I know (or my mom tells me) I am. I will call you names and post comments on the forums and tell everyone about it, I mean its easier than to accept a challenge. And all the like-minded people will agree. Unfortunately it seems that this is how the majority of gamers out there think.

Unfortunately the world is moving away from LANs, this became clear when AAA titles were released without LAN support. LANs used to be about fun, about socializing with friends and like minded people. However, its just easier nowadays, you can still communicate with your buddies, Teamspeak, the internet is fast enough to play games together, there is more people to play your favorite game with, no more having to play what everyone is playing, even if you you have to play Frontlines in Munich, Germany or BF2's Highway Tempa in the USA. Also at LANs people could see you, give you a smack against the head if you act immature (or call your mom to come and pick you up, something we had to do once).
I suppose all the small social LANs will gradually die away, its just not worth the effort anymore.

Of course not everyone behaves like this. There are those who play the game for fun, who play for the team, who seldom complains, who knows that while this round sucked, the next one will be better, who quietly make the game a better experience for everyone. They don't voice their grievances publicly, they don't leave comments on forums, hoping others will agree, they accept that everyone brings something different to the game, that's what makes it better than to play against programmed AI players.
You will not see them though, because your attention is focused on the loud mouth who feel everyone is interested in his opinions and the idiot who just have to ruin the game for everyone.

well said, which makes me think more and more how achievement* unlocked is breaking gaming...

*i lol'ed, had it wrong and first suggestion was underachievement :D

I always find it amusing when you encounter assholes ingame, it's a nice form of entertainment

OT: I think rafi's post brought a tear to my eye, <20 post and he has a post that's miles better than any I've ever made, possibly even better than any post made by the majority of the MyG community.

I'm not sure it's any to do with, um, "rites of manhood", but rather a patriarchal (and, frankly, atavistic) socialisation imperative that promotes aggression, extreme competitiveness, and winning at all costs. Just look at the ridiculous emphasis placed on boys' sports in high schools - and not only is that breeding generations of thuggish males, but those that aren't competent at sports are often bullied. This almost entirely artificial power disparity then leads those frustrated, ostracised, "emasculated" males to assert themselves elsewhere - like the internet.

So what excuse do the women have for being more aggro than the guys? :D:p
