The firearms thread

You don't know bullet smiths :p My Dad's Uncle has been making me rounds for years, acquiring them up north shouldn't be too difficult either.

Very cool!

But I still wouldn't recommend a 5-7 as a person's first carry gun :p

Have you ever handled one, you'd be surprised how subtle it fits and reacts. I was personally amazed by the weight, it's GISI over seas, but generally for the marine roles. I only got one much later on.
I started off with a SIG SP 2022 (So I appreciate your love for them), many also brandished classic B-92's like the PAMAS G1 and even Glock 17's.
I also fired my favourite pistol of all time, the H&K USP - These are also pretty SI and the GIGN used them solely.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's not a bad gun at all. But as you've said yourself, you have to know the right people from which to get not only parts, but ammunition (you have to be a pretty dedicated shooter to make your own ammunition - including casting/milling bullets). So in terms of practicality - in the SA context - it fails pretty hard. It makes a lot more sense to make your first EDC firearm a firearm for which parts and ammo are easily (and relatively cheaply) available. That's really the point I'm trying to get across here.

As to those other firearms, I've also shot all of them. Loved the B92 and 2022, but was less enamoured of the G17 - grip felt awkward to me. I actually came within a whisker of buying the H&K USP 9mm when I got my Sig, but the Sig just felt better in my hand. Would love to get a full-size .45 USP at some stage in my life.

Guess what's happening this weekend...? :D

I'm presuming he means the full package thing?

There are quite a few clubs who will take you through the full process, competency and licensing. Where are you based Insanity?

Seen a place include a Glock in the price. Came to something like R12 000. Was cheaper doing everything separate. But I am sure there are a few more that are in a decent price range.

No i have my compentency im talking about the process that follows im in midrand in jhb

Awesome! Some first hand experience. Think I will give him a go when my rifle competency is approved.

Spent the morning on the range. Fun times!

My Tikka is a complete tack-driver. Consistently shoots sub-MOA (and very sub-MOA, at that). Any slight variance in impact points is coming from me, now :)

Also figured out a few things about my pistol:
1) The Winchester White Box ammo is incredibly gentle - averages 650fps over a chrony, from the Sig's 4" barrel.
2) The Barnaul steel cased ammo is loaded insanely hot - averaged 1150fps over the chrony. It's so hot, it refuses to extract from my mates P30.
3) My Sig looooves 147gr bullets. The 115gr WWB and Barnaul consistently shoot 2" low at 10m and 20m, whilst the 147gr ammo hits point-of-aim all the day long.
