The Genesis of a Gamer

Opinion: I, Gamer

Recently, gaming as a hobby has come out of the closet, so to speak. With the introduction of the Wii, I believe, and the uptake of “casual” gamers indoctrinated into the gaming subculture that occurred as a result of the Wii, there are more and more people who believe that gaming constitutes a legitimate pastime. Where once we had to hide in the shadows for fear of ridicule, we can now hold our heads proud and exclaim to the world, “I am a gamer!”

Like Tsar say, it's like the music industry.

Metal and rock music used to be at the very best when it was for the outcasted groups.
Than it suddenly became popular and every Tom, Harry and Dick sucker thought they could be rock stars.

Same is happening with gaming. Every litte dumb twat thinks they can game. Games are being dumbed down to make them think there "h@rdc0r3 l33t"

Actually I don't remember anyone not liking TV Games as they called it then. It was PC's that labeled you as a nerd or an outcast, I know I walked that line as I preferred PCs. Years have started to blur the line between this now and I am worried.

I think with current production costs, companies can`t afford to make games that are not popular culture. Sad but true... same with music and hollywood drivel.

People who need their hobbies to be "different" need to get real. Whether something is mainstream or not should have absolutely no bearing on whether you're going to like it. And if it does, really, you're a boob. You should grow out of that business when you're 12.

To be honest I don't mind game having huge budgets. I just wish they would not use the word trendy or harcore:D

The thing is, when things get popular, they decline, made for a wider market where alot gets striped away to make it more apealing for more people.

Less is not more.

But I can atleast take consolation in the fact that this will not last long, the phase will pass and developers will rize over the publishers again, and truly great games will return again.

The ironic thing about such people is that deliberately going against the flow for the sake of going against the flow is the equivalent to going with the flow. Neither are done with conviction, but both are done to alter others' perception of you.

Heh, hence the "OMG WE'RE SO NON-CONFORMIST, WE'RE JUST GOING TO LOOK LIKE EACH OTHER INSTEAD." caption under the picture. ;) I'm so pleased someone else sees it for what it is.

I wrote an opinion article in NAG about this, actually. It's the "I WANNA BE SPESHUL" condition.
