The Gunnar Optiks... wtf?!

So I finally got myself a pair of gunnar optiks from zapsgaming. Settled on the Sheadog since well I'm not prepared to pay 1K or more for this yet. I mean for all I knew back then it was all just bullshit.

The obvious question... Do this work or is it just pure gimmickry?
So far having used them at work for a month now I've not yet feel that ache and pains in my eyes that I use to feel, so in short yes.

My motivation and bit of back story:
We've changed over to green offices, but in all truth I'd beg to differ on that part. Sure it is green "on the outside", but what of the people on the inside. I've come to the conclusion that green isn't always better but seems to play out as another xEE xAA to "please the masters" and "make money".

My green building feelings aside... the problem is that now we have super bright lighting in the office, because of the tables (and pretty much everything else) being white and now it is reflecting the light volume back up at you. It just feels to bright and it sets off my light sensitivity. On most most days I can cope but some just well I feel like it is the second coming and just too much of white around me.

So I tried a few things to help with the glare, but so far nothing really helped. Then decided to try out these glasses.

Good grief everything is like beer !
Yeah it's bit psychedelic when you first put it on as it took me solid 2 weeks to get used to this yellow and the whole idea of wearing glasses. When you had it on and you take it off the screens really look like it is rounded out towards you. When it is on it feels a bit like the imax bigger, clearer and focused. Lol, can't find the word now... everything is like "brought out to you" like when you would look at something and for example the red stands out above the other colours, in a good way.

Site note: yes the whites are yellowish, but so far it hasn't really bothered me at all. The glasses however as mentioned is something to get used to.

What about just wearing night driving glasses?
I've read about this that you can just as well wear night driving glasses for the same effect, however I was not able to test this since I don't have any.

In closing
As I've said I've yet to have eyes from hell after using the gunnar so something must be working. I've tested this against most of my variants like days with least sleep to days of having overs slept. Normally on the days of least sleep I tend to pick up light sensitivity more. However it seems that I've grown used to them and prefer having them on when I'm at work since that is where I spent about the whole of my day in front of lcds...

...feel free to ask and I will try to answer :)

I've had a pair of Gunnars for about half a year now and I'm very happy with them. All the talk about "eye fatigue" seems to have some measure of truth to it, seeing that after LANs I no longer feel like my eyes will start bleeding and in general, they feel less strained after a long gaming session.

I agree that it takes a fair amount of getting used to with the yellow tint in everything, but after about a week or two you'll barely notice it.

My only bit of concern with these glasses (this applies to sunglasses too though) is that your eyes get too used to them. When I work at night and stare at white Word documents for hours on end, and forget to put on my glasses, then my eyes start feeling twitchy and I tire more quickly than I used to, pre-Gunnar. So I've made a habit of somewhat balancing my time with and without glasses, so my eyes don't become overly sensitive without them when I'm staring at LCDs.

Thanks man, I have been curious about them for a while now. They are a bit pricey, but that doesn't really make me want them less. I had severe eye strain last year, which caused epic headaches for about 3 solid weeks. I eventually realised that my eyes were responsible and got some prescription glasses to alleviate eye strain. I don't need them to read, as my eyesight is great, but staring at screens for 18 hours a day starts taking its toll.

Just out of curiosity, you said you got them from Zaps. Where they expensive?

i got glasses for this exact reason(although not gunnars) but they have anti-glare on and work wonderous too. Glasses do tend to spoil your eyes as i wear my glases permanently now and cannot work on a pc for more than 5 min without glasses.

@Tempy, I only use them at work.

@Lupus, you can get prescription gunnars.

@TheAvenged87, it was R640.
