The magical modern mouse pad (Column)

I've been thinking of getting a hard razer mousepad for a while now. But the issue is that I can't try them out beforehand. All I want to test is if it will be comfortable with my Sidewinder mouse. And all my gaming buddies have the standard soft pads... or a book of sorts.

My mouse settings are always at max... 2000dpi, full sensitivity.

Is there a place where I can test out a few of the pads? Esquire has them, but I doubt if they'll allow me to take in my mouse and pretend I'm playing Starcraft. :P
 
There's one type of pad which I really hate - and it's those "cheap-cheap-cheap" junk pads which doesn't work with optical mice.

Whenever I encounter such a pad, I have the intense desire to hurl said pad as far away as possible, but unfortunately, I can't as it's not mine... :(

I tell the user where the problem is, but it just seems to go in the one ear and out the other as the pad is not discarded, but is kept on for as long as possible. :mad:

I've been using the side of my computer desk and that's never let me down. I'd rather just have a proper mouse than get a pad.
