The Obsessive Compulsive Collectors Edition Owner! (OCCEO) :P

Do any of you guys/girls perhaps know a friend or family member who is an obsessive Collectors Edition buyer? It struck me the other day when I was told that one of my friends was complaining about how many awesome games were coming out soon and he doesn't have the money to get all the collectors editions. It was jokingly said if he sold all his other collector's memorabilia he could afford the new collectors. Naturally he was not impressed :)

This really begs the question, are some people obsessed with purchasing collectors editions? I can at least say I know of one such person. The scary thing is they are purchased just for the sake of "having them". I can somewhat understand a person who can show off their collectors editions in display cabinets in their "gaming rooms" or something to that affect. Don't get me wrong, I love my collectors editions, but they are bought and looked after well, and the goodies are put to good use. I make use of my StarCraft II Wings of Liberty CE USB stick on a daily basis, I have the sound track ripped to my PC and often listen to it, and the art book sits on my coffee stand, along with my GT5 CE Apex book. I just think some people go out and spend their hard earned money (or their parents) on Collectors Editions that they may box away and never look at again. If that is you I urge you to go get all your collectors editions and go through the many great extra's you got with them, provided they are decent CE's :)

My friend recently pre-purchased the Duke Nukem Forever CE, and I kept my mouth shut until it arrived. And after about a week I asked "hey how is your Duke CE" and was only met with " :[ "
I'm not bashing all you collector's, I'm just asking if you know of a OCCEO, and if you think it's justified to just buy any and all CE's that come out. I am very picky when it comes to Collector's Editions, I would have loved to get The Witcher CE which had a really amazing package, but settled for the Enhanced Edition that was bought from MyGaming shop for like R199 in the end. (discount codes ftw)

Since we're on the topic of CE's, what CE's are you looking forward to and WHY. Is it the bragging rights, extra content, functional items (like USB's), figurines etc?

Collecting or obsessive collecting is a common thing to do. Many people do it, although most collectables are pretty useless - i.e. they are trinkets, like Smurf Dolls, stamps or World Cup Coke cans (okay, there is Coke inside, so there is some value). I think a lot has been written on this in terms of WOW. As for games etc. CE versions and so forth, I guess it's the same. Then again, I've never bought a CE edition of a game, so who am I to argue - but I have friends and family who collect things and to the outsider it makes no sense whatsoever.

Many of my collectors editions stay in their box on the shelf - but I still like buying them.

I used to be like that. I had a huge cupboard full of top end games. When I switched to console gaming I sold almost all of my collection. The other day I threw away the remaining old games that were not special editions and for which there is no market. At first I collected PS3 games but stopped that too. Now I buy games mostly second hand and sell them as soon as I have the plat. Ill even buy a game that has just the disc to play and then pass on. It is not worth it anymore for me to have all that money tied up in the collectors editions.

I love collector's figurines. Art books, extra game content, or usb sticks, no thanks. I want that figurine to look at on the shelf. And if the figurine doesnt look like the character (eg Uncharted 3 Nathan) its less likely I'll buy it. I'm not an OCCEO though. Quite the opposite.

After witcher2's CE there is yet to be another CE that around that level. Most CE is generic box + case + artbook + doll + maybe ost, those are boring and I have to be really motivated to get them. Most games I buy will be via steam and the CE for select few that really is worth it or obviously games for my xbox.

Most recent disappointing ce was that mk9, really not worth it. I do hope Deus EX CE with doll and all is better than that was.

Why do you say the MK9 ce wasnt worth it? I really wanted to get it.

Only the obsessive compulsive or the insecure egotistical feel the need to collect things.
And yet I still sometimes do this....esp DLCs...I like games to be complete. Damn...

I'm tempted to buy the collector editions for the games I really like.

I have the ACB Codex edition and GT5 CE. My next will one will be Batman AC as I am a HUGE Batman fan.

I wanted to get Infamous 2 Hero edition but couldn't afford it. Considering on getting the ME3 N7 edition as well.

However, I have no shelving in my room to show off all of my stuff. :(

Saying that, i think some CE's are just a way of getting more money out of you. I bought the Killzone 3 CE for R399 and really can't see how that originally cost over R1000.

Well, the only proper CE i have is Bioshock II.

The sad part is paying 800 bucks for it and then some time later it being available for R299. SUCKS!!!!!

But it does have some pretty cool stuff in it like posters with blacklight hidden messages, artbook (that rocks), and both Bioshock 1 and 2 soundtracks.

It's the only fully-fledged "comes with physical extra stuff and not dlc" EC i own.

I just do not see the use of paying that much for the things. They lose value faster than you'd expect and when the next console comes along, you;re sadly stuck with stuff most people will label as "junk", worth nothing.

Oh, and I also have the Dante's Inferno Death Edition. Picked it up for R150 brand new. Nothing really special about it, except the super-cool-awesome hologram sleeve it comes in.

Where in the world did you get the Killzone 3 CE for R400???
