There are allot of genres so if you ever watched a movie which you think was great then chances are there is an anime out there with a similar genre.

My favorite genre so far is aliens or monsters invading earth and lots of characters dying gruesomely.

BTW,King of thorns was great.8/10,it got a bit fast paced at the end but the rest was awesome.

Anime is Japanese made cartoons essentially. Dragonball Z is just one type. There loads of different categories and possibly 1000's of different anime. A lot based on Manga (Comic books).

Dragonball Z, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece are the most popular long running ones. For instance One Piece has been running since the late 90's.

Anime is very addictive and one you start you'll be hooked almost instantly. Preferably if going to watch, watch them in Japanese with English subtitles.

While that is a crude and very rough definition.

A short trip to Google and then to wikipedia gives us this answer.

The word is the abbreviated pronunciation of "animation" in Japanese. In English, the term is defined as a style of animation originating in Japan, which often features colorful graphics, vibrant characters and action-filled plots with fantastic or futuristic themes. The intended meaning of the term sometimes varies depending on the context.

Dragonball Z, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece are the most popular long running ones. For instance One Piece has been running since the late 90's.

While DBZ is popular it's manga had a better reception than it's series in Japan, Specifically the Original Dragonball, Z and GT where not so well revived. One Piece has a cult following and probably fulls the most weekly viewers and not that Bleach ended so does Naruto but those are "shonen" shows, which appeal to the youth and people up to their mid 20's.
If making a reference to Dragonball, Naruto and One Piece in a "Western" context you could say they are very popular in other countries due to the fact that they have been aired on 100's of TV stations globally.

Surprisingly not many people like Amime, perhaps it has to do with the realism factor, or they don't want to read all those subtitles, it also may stem from the fact that people simply don't like animated TV shows or films.
While it is always nice to watch something in it's Original Language, sometimes the English dub is well worth a watch. Hellsing Ultimate, Gundam Unicorn, Yu Yu Hakusho, TTGL, Ghost In the Shell - They all had very well done English dubs.

+1 rep! :D

The definition given my Monkey isn't entirely incorrect. For us Westerners, anime indeed refers only to Japanese animation. However, in Japan, if it's a cartoon - it's anime. They apply the word to anything that's animated, be it Korean, Chinese, Japanese or American.

It's just a case of us taking a word that the Japanese use and giving it a similar but slightly different meaning. Same as with words like hentai, ecchi, otaku and a couple of others I could probably dig up if I was inclined to.

Glordit, it wasn't meant to be a detailed, carefully worded explanation.

Most of it is semantics. Anime is essentially cartoons, whether it's Japanese, Korean... etc. It's animated shows.

As for not many people liking anime, that's a bold generalisation as it's impossible to state how many people actually watched it and don't like it or how many don't like it. All over the world there are millions of people that do like and watch anime and I did say it's preferable to watch in Japanese with subtitles since that is my preference and that's my opinion, I didn't say that he should exclusively watch it in Japanese as there are as you said some good english dubs.

Apologies if is seemed to harsh, I just saw your definition a little generalised and lacking in a a bit of detail. When specifics are not given sometimes people tend to mistake things and group what they think as similar thing together, which in turn can cause faulty analogy.

*back on topic*

Zettai Karen Children THE UNLIMITED - Hyoubu Kyousuke seems to be shaping up nicely, have yet to see the Original ZKC as I have only seen episodes from the second half of the series.

Finished Sword Art Online and it was pure awesome:eek:... Now on to Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood:D

Want those FMA B blu rays soooo badly but the set is out of my budget at the moment. Can get the dvd set but just wont be the same. Unless I get the Volumed sets... Will check out amazon.

I really should get some of these on blu ray/dvd:o. Only watched 2 episodes of FMA so far and it looks like it has a good storyline.

No worries Glordit. I specifically went for generalised explanation. For lot of people seems to suffice. Obviously as we know there's a whole lot more. :)

Would love the FMA B Blue ray set but might be a while till I can get that, bills will have to come first unfortunately :)

Yea FMA came out originally but deviated from the manga, then years later brotherhood was released and it followed it through to the end.

So its basically japanese cartoons with an more adult theme? And the style doesn't really have any similarities with cartoons like tom and jerry. I might try it some time where do you guys get them? :)

Depends if you want to download them in high quality or watch them in average quality on the go.

AnimeFreak.tv has most anime and the ones you can't find you will find at lovemyanime.net

Animestash.info has all the new anime's,their old stuff was unfortunately wiped out when some copyright company wiped file sharing sites (the one that wiped out megaupload)

Nyaa torrents will probably have the most anime and anime related things for download.

It's basically adult and not so-adult,things like gantz is more for the adult crowd while other things like Toriko,one-piece,naruto,bleach and DBZ might be for the younger crowd while they still have violence.
