The Official "MyGaming" Anime Thread

^ This, a thousand times this!

A lot of anime fans I know say watching any anime in dub is sacrilege.

I do admit, the Japanese voice over brings out more the true emotion in the anime. But most of the time I just prefer the English dub. The subtitles do become distracting even when you're used to it.

I wouldn't go as far as calling it a sacriledge - I know quite a few people have trouble watching and reading subs at the same time. But after having watched as much anime as I have, the difference in voice-over quality (with a few rare exceptions) is very noticeable. And the second point is that a lot of subtle undertones are lost because so many concepts don't translate over to English very well, so they get changed or totally replaced. In any series that relies on humour and gags, this completely kills things.

And I at least have the advantage in understanding enough Japanese that I only really need the subs as a guide.

im not an anime fan per se

but i've gotten my hands on samurai champloo and black lagoon ! starting it hopefully this weekend.

There are different genres of anime, you might like the ones that are more serious.

If you like those then you might also like Berserk.

only anime's ive liked was blue gender, initial D, wangan midnight, and gurenn lagann

Blue Gender! This was the very first anime I watched. And oh my damn was it captivating. If it wasn't for Blue Gender, I would not have bothered with Anime.

Trying out hunter x hunter.

I am sad they only got out episode 86 for fairy tail with the english dub. I miss my blue cat :(

How's that any different from reading subtitles? It's still translated to a different language in either case - anyone not speaking the language still loses out (except you).

On a side note, anyone happen to come across the Naruto dub fillers on SABC 2? That has got to be the most atrocious voice acting I've ever heard! It sounds as if all the characters are voiced by the same VA and they all (both male and female) sound like jocks or "dudebros". It's like a fandub. Were there two separate dubs or something?

I've noticed the same thing with Dragonball Z "KAI" that SABC2 played. The voice overs were just not... them. So it is possible that these Naruto dubs are different. Although, I only came across Naruto on SABC2 last weekend and watched brief snippets of it, so I cant really tell.

All I know is, Naruto's English voice over is done by a woman.

Not all dubed anime is good. they stuff up a lot of them but some they get right.

I got into One peice 2 months back and started with dubed started to like it then juct went into subed that got some getting used. Same if you go from sub to bubed you get used to it. But like i said before some anime the buded is really bad, but why bother watching the Naruto on tv when you can watch it online with no adverts.

FML. Super post, seriously going to PM people from now.

They lose out on what? the Annunciation and character are still in their voices, I think it would be very different if you watched a episode with no sound and just read subtitles, as opposed to reading subtitles and watching with sound, I assure you that you will get a "feel" for many situations a lot quicker than not listening to the voices at all.

I think we find the dub's bad because it's all American accents that we are hearing. I am pretty sure Hypothetically speaking of course, if anime originated in America and was dubbed into Japanese we would be having the same conversation right now.

AFAIK. DBZ:K and Naruto are both the Original FUNimation dub.

HunterXHunter you won't regret (the remake that is) the previous anime stopped after a major story arc and as far as I can tell they have passed it ages ago in the remake.

As for FT it is going to start airing again sometime this year - the date escapes me now.

My lazy nature is challenged by your wisdom :P

Berserk actually got me into Anime, really sad they haven't planned following up on that series. Loved the Dark Souls Artorius tribute to Guts -Amazeballs!

They have made a series of films (3 so far) which surpass the anime in many aspects.

Yes, that's rather unfortunate. But in the end my main gripe with dubs is the fact that the majority of English voice actors suck at doing anything that requires any emotion whatsoever - watching a dubbed drama brings me to literal tears, and it's not the story that does it.

Anyone have a clue where I can acquire the Naruto Movies easily?

Amazon.co.uk has awesome prices and their shipping is quite resonable.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Naruto-The-...F8&qid=1389640418&sr=8-1&keywords=Naruto+film

If you are enquiring about other methods:

http://www.crunchyroll.com/

...if you want it via other 'other' methods, sadly I will not divulge that information.

Emotion that is what most english VO's lack. They are flat and boring 99% of the time.

0.o

If anything the dubs make me want to claw my ears off my head ...

Yeah I feel like scratching my ear drums out when I have to listen to dubs. There is no feeling in dubs and a lot of emotion is lost in the dubbed versions imho.
