The Old Republic expected to Fail

According to an anonymous employee of Bioware Mythic, Star Wars: The Old Republic is going to be a massive failure.

The anonymous employee, blogging as ‘EA Louse’, reports that the Old Republic’s development budget has exceeded $300 million.

Over and above this huge cost, this anonymous employee says that, factoring out the soundwork, “the rest of the game is a joke”, putting EA and George Lucas in a state of panic.

EA Louse wrote on the blog: “And Bioware? Don’t make me laugh. They’ve spent more money making the Old Republic than James Cameron spent on Avatar. Shit you not. More than $300 million! Can you believe that?

“And you know what they’re most proud of? This is the kicker. They are most proud of the sound. No seriously. Something like a 20Gig installation, and most of it is voiceover work. That’s the best they have.

“The rest of the game is a joke. EA knows it and so does George Lucas, they’re panicking, and so most of Mythic has already been cannibalized to work in Austin on it because they can’t keep pushing back launch.

“Old Republic will be one of the greatest failures in the history of MMOs from EA. Probably at the level of the Sims Online. We all know it too.”

While all of this sounds interesting, it’s hard to dismiss the fact that EA Louse also wrote on his blog that he discovered that he would be “dismissed from Bioware Mythic during the next round of layoffs EA coming this November.”

That would give him good reason to be bitter, and would partly – or entirely – explain why he has prompted this attack against the game, EA and George Lucas.

I could be a detective, hey?

Keep in mind that I am not defending the Old Republic, EA or George Lucas. I’m merely putting everything forward fairly.

It was revealed back in March that the Old Republic is EA’s biggest project ever, but $300 million would definitely give us a shock if this is a true figure.

It might be a good idea to check the sources down below and read the blog entry by EA Louse for yourself – he’s a pretty upset anonymous person.

He seems to make it come across as pathetic if a game's sound is the only pulling card it has going for it, what he doesn't mention is unlike current MMO's, this game's quests will be entirely voice-acting based instead of generic greeting snippets being played before reading a quest line as with the popular MMO's.

So yeah ... the sound in this game is in fact a BIG deal and something to be quite proud of.

checked it now. But it sucks, cause I was really looking forward to this title

They have the advantage of learning from SW:Galaxies' mistakes. I think it's going to be a rocking title...more character growth oriented vs the typical boost-to-end-game-content type of play.

If this game can be in anyway compared to KOTOR then it can only be brilliant. Has anyone heard anything about a release date yet?

P.S. I hope they bring it to consoles aswell in the future

The Old Republic expected to Fail - Thats why there is GW2 :D

Sad that it is failing, would have been a awesome game...

Too much speculation to be honest. This is curious news, however, everyone should take it with a pinch of salt. Everything runs of the risk of ultimately sucking regardless of its lineage. Time will settle this.

Right now MMO's need to find something refreshing to reinvigorate the market. Despite all the information about how X title was going to add something revolutionary, pretty much all post WoW MMO's are clones.

Why in gods name does everybody refer to all modern day MMO's as fucken WoW clones, why not take it back to its original state and rather say that all bloody MMO's are infact UO clones including that kak game WoW!

Luckily Guildwars can never be called a WoW/UO clone :D

A fully voiced Star Wars Themed MMO = Fresh

The sound alone will not make it "fresh", sorry. It a nice change that's for sure, but if the gameplay is indicative of ALL the latest MMO's, than it is stale.

Pretty much all modern day MMO's post WoW ARE WoW clones! WoW took a genre that was not userfriendly and accessible and made it so. As much as I dislike WoW on many levels it changed MMO's in a HUGE way. These latest MMO's have vastly more in common with WoW than with UO. So the comparison is valid.

WoW did not make MMO's, but it changed the direction in a big way.

WoW isn't a UO clone =) Its an Everquest clone. Really the two "original" big MMOs were Ultima Online and Everquest and they both had a vastly different approach to the MMO experience. UO being sandbox and Everquest being themepark. Eve Online and Darkfall would be better examples of UO clones, obviously UO clones are few and far between.

Anyway, people say WoW clone because quite clearly most MMOs that come out are not trying to copy Everquest, they try to copy WoW with its refinements to the themepark MMO and obviously fail miserably in trying to copy it success.

Its Star Wars... Episode 1 sucked and it didn't fail. :p

Yeah ... but movies and MMOs are two vastly different things. Every Star Wars fanboy would get hold of Episode 1 without question, but it doesn't automatically translate them into MMO players. If the game doesn't pull in enough subs it'll go Tabula Rasa on us ...

MMOs are an ongoing commitment from the production house, whereas a movie, once completed, is done and dusted.
