The people we love the most in the gaming world

Every industry have them, the pioneers, the trouble makers, the visionaries, the visiona-scaries, the people that represent the face of the gaming world. These people have all made massive strides in making the gaming word what it is today.

This weekend I will have the great fortune of attending an event that one such person will be talking at; HIDEO KOJIMA will be at RTX this weekend.

This got me thinking about all the different people we either love/loathe/admire/despise within the gaming industry. For me there are 3 individuals that I would say are my favourite gaming people:

Warren Spector

Warren was responsible for my all time favourite game, Deus Ex. But Warren has also been influential in various other projects, like Wing Commander, Ultima, System Shock and Thief.

Sid Meier

The reason should be obvious why Sid Meier is one of my favourite people in gaming. The Civilization game series alone is more than enough reason

Chris Sawyer

Developer of the Rollercoaster Tycoon series and other classics such as Transport Tycoon, he is a genius in making a spreadsheet into an incredibly fun game.

So who is your favourite people in the gaming industry? Or who is the people you hate the most?

I'm going to be showing my age here again, but what the heck... Three game designers/developers that strongly influenced my formative gaming years. (Also "love" is probably a little strong for me in this context, so let's go with "admire and appreciate" rather :))

Will Wright: founded Maxis, designed the original SimCity, and it's many subsequent off-shoots like SimAnt, original designer of The Sims games, developed Spore.

Al Lowe: worked mostly for Sierra On-Line, created the Leisure Suit Larry series, also worked on some of Sierra's Kings Quest and Police Quest titles.

Chris Roberts: The Wing Commander series of games probably had the biggest long-term impact on my early gaming life. Throw in Privateer, Freelancer and now, Star Citizen, and I'm sorted.

That is a difficult question. I don't really follow the actual personalities behind the game.

There are a lot of people you could list who have made a tremendous impact on the gaming industry.

For me the top few would be:

Gabe Newell - Half-Life, Portal, Steam
John Carmack - hugely enhanced game development for everyone
Dan Houser - the GTA guy
Sid Meier - love the Civ series
Satoru Iwata - Mr Nintendo
Kaz Hirai - Mr Sony

People I like in gaming are the original cowboys of the day, the guys that brought me Doom, Quake, Duke, Blood, Shadow Warrior, Hexen and Heretic. Dev companies like id Software, Raven Software, Rogue Entertainment, Xatrix, Monolith and 3D Realms.
My life would be sooooo different if not for them. I've learned so much from them, both in gaming and in computers.

But the devs in the original id Software crew, the guys that started out and grew to give us the first iterations of Doom and Quake...gods!

One particular company that pissed me off was Irrational Games. Their attitude towards the Tribes franchise and community, in essence, was "Fuck you guys and what you like, we will make what we want." I'm not going to google now, but they said something to thtat effect.
They certainly showed us, their game was so successful, soon after launch it had fewer than a 100 players on world wide. (They had a total player counter on their home page.)

Though, they did bring us BioShock, but it still leaves a bad taste for me. Tribes was one of those games where players were fiercely loyal and tight nit group, esp in South Africa. These selfish dumb pricks just couldnt care.

Al Lowe: worked mostly for Sierra On-Line, created the Leisure Suit Larry series, also worked on some of Sierra's Kings Quest and Police Quest titles.

I'll also just add The two guys from Andromeda with Al Lowe.

I have to go with the Johns from iD Software :

John Carmack
John Romero

Then also Frederick Raynal and Chris Roberts

Oh flip, I forgot about Chris Roberts. Yeah total legend.

I'm keeping an eye on Star Citizen development, but I still haven't pledged. The footage I've seen thus far is pretty janky, and the promises they've made are immense. I'm waiting until the game looks a lot more complete before getting involved with all of that.

Zachery Levi Founder of Nerd machine/HQ

he's like a male felicia day :D :p

and cliffy B, he's probably the most successful rockstar type of developer (Romero doesnt count he's a chop) and the guy friggin gave us gears of war
