So I have been buying from a few online stores both local and international and you can see a difference between them, not just in the way they look and function but also there service. So what would you say would make the perfect online store for you in South Africa? what would make you go, dam they'er good:wtf:?

1. Free delivery within 24-48 hours nationwide.
2. A wide selection of products including some that are difficult to source locally.
3. Knowledgeable staff that are willing to help their customers.
4. Prices that are competitive and not inflated to cover point 1.
5. A good reputation (this is achieved by repeating points 1 to 4 for a long time).

Easy points that are very difficult to achieve. There are a number of shops that can cover a few of those points, but I've never seen one manage all 5.

That's a solid 5 points and that will take some doing, but that will make for a good online store. And we need that kind of service. What are some of the points you usually see?

I would like one more point.
Ease of navigating and finding what you are looking for. With lots of relevant filters. For example if i am in the Hard Disk Drive section and would like to filter on size, make, interface, speed. but when i go to the CPU section filters should be relevant to CPU's

Being in this business and importing some stuff I can tell you that even most US and EU based online stores will have difficulty with your 1st request. Unfortunately online stores don't usually carry any stock, they also wait till payment clears before ordering stock, so if your eft takes 24 hours to clear then you've already lost a day. On top of that, stock then has to be delivered to the online store and then sent out to the respective address, some people stay out in the middle of no where so overnight shipping isn't possible especially if you expect it to be free. (Can cost anything from R200 up to R800 depending on size, weight, destination). So again very difficult to achieve that 24-48 hour turn around time.

There are some companies that strive for the above mentioned turn around times and some (Rebeltech) Almost always deliver within 48 hours of my order being placed which is why I stick with them.

In my experience most online stores don't really bother with parts that are not from locally sourced suppliers, although some will order parts for you at your request. Again Rebeltech ordered a monitor and some watercooling bits for me that wasn't available locally and I received it within 2 weeks of placing my order, which is astonishingly good considering the distance and how slow the local custom clearance is.

I also think people that want to order from an online store should do research about the product/s they are interested in, I agree that the staff must be knowledgeable but you can't expect them to know everything (30 000 products). We live in a world where almost everyone has access to the internet (Your buying from an online store...duh). The staff should be friendly and helpful..yes.

Most online shops work with very small mark ups, they tend to be cheaper than walk in stores because they don't have to spend money on carrying stock in the shop. That said, there are some that are insanely over prices...not mentioning names.

Having used pretty much every local online shop and some international shops I would have to rate Rebeltech as my number 1 go to shop. I've spent a TON of money with them and will continue to do so, there have been some slip ups here and there but for 95% of my orders things were delivered on time and in perfect order (300 orders +).

I think one thing that should be added to the list is that customers should realize that they are dealing with an online shop, they can't expect to order something Tuesday morning and then they want to collect it by lunch time, that's just being retarded as far as I am concerned.

My thoughts...

Good point. I have been frustrated by many shops where products are incorrectly categorized.

True on every point. But the OP did ask for a "perfect" store, so I day-dreamed a bit :D

In my opinion, TakeAlot (TakeTwo) back then was the best online shop I've ever come across. What made them stand out was their service to import anything from Amazon UK or US. That, again in my opinion, was probably THE best thing about any online shop I've ever used.

But as with all good things, that came to an abrupt end. They simply stopped their Amazon importing service. There seems to be no other online store in SA that can offer that.

Personally, if I could find an online store in South Africa that would help me import stuff from the States I'd be a happy camper. So many times there are products you see from US retailers, but there's no shipping option to SA. The joys of living in a 3rd World country.

I miss that feature so much. I wish we'd gotten clarity as to why they ended that. I can't believe it wasn't popular so it must've had something to do with Amazon themselves.

With regards to Amazon, if you make payment before a specific time of the day and they do have stock they can ship the item the same day. That is of course if you are opting for the UPS options which can become quite costly.

Its hard running an online store, There is little mark up on products so shipping is your cost, unless its a huge order then there should a free shipping option.

Ja its hard to know erverything for staff, your on the internet already just search the product or product code, you bound to find info, youtube reviews on it.

Updating prices and products is alot of work for online stores and to compete online with other online stores is hard to offer free shipping when they only making say R30-R50 on a product that will cost R80-R150 to ship, so they will run at a loss and close.

Also if customers were more understanding and read the terms where it states most of the time stock is not kept and there has to be communication between them and suppliers befor final prices and stock can be confirmed.

Like if I order something or go into a shop and they running around trying to find out something I understand thats its not their fault something is not where it used to be as stock moves in out and around the store also staff are assigned a area of which they will know more about.

How would compare Kalahari's service to TakeAlot's? I only ever used TakeAlot but Kalahari every now and then have some pretty good deals (kinda put off by the 2nd hand deals and the less fancy layout of Kalahari.)

I'm curious, what is the average you spend online on PC parts? I think my average is around +-R1000 but it can go up quickly. I also buy a few smaller items but it depends of the shipping cost and how fast I need it.

Varies from R300 - R3000 Depending on the parts, but I usually just order straight from the distributors, even if its just R50 - R100 cheaper than most online stores
