The Plight of the SA Twitch Streamer

Sorry that i am late to this party...

But could I stream on a 10 meg line? And if so what kind of quality/in-game lag?

As far as i know as long as your 10Mb line can upload at a decent speed you should be fine. I might be wrong here, but i think 2mb upload is a good base line to start off with. Obviously if your able to get higher upload speeds you'll have better quality streams.

Followed both of you on Twitch, will try to watch the next stream :)

I'm interested in this as well. Will look for more information tomorrow :)

You won't be able to stream on a 10MB unfortunately.

My upload speed on my 10MB is only 900kbps. As mentioned in this thread, you need a minimum of 2Mbps upload to provide an okay-ish stream without affecting your actual gameplay.

OBS is one of the best and easiest programs to use for streaming, and they also have a calculator to provide you with optimal bitrate settings based on your upload speed.

I tried streaming WoW, BF4 and Diablo 3 to test various game styles and network usage, but my friend told me the stream quality was just terrible.

10mbs fixed line ADSL is crap for streaming. Upload speeds are said to be 1mbs but are more like 0.6mbs. For a good quality looking stream, you need a bit rate of 1800kbs and then you still have to have some headroom for whatever game you're playing plus any VoIP or Skype calls you're going to be having at the same time. So I'd say you need at least a 4mbs upload and you will pay out your ass for it

So heres the digs. For low speed games you need a lower bitrate.
So things like hearthstone I stream in 720 using 1.1 Meg up.

Faster things like Dota and Diablo and FPS will require at least 1.8 to 2 Meg up unless you are okay with serious artifacts.(Which ruins your stream completely)

Closest server with best ping for me is France to which I get about 7 Meg up.

I wouldn't really say this is a South Africa problem only. Even in the UK their residential products are even heavier focused on download rather than upload. The difference is that they do offer alternatives where your needs are more towards upload than download, which we don't have here.

There is definitely more focus being brought to Fiber-to-Home so hopefully soon this will be a thing of the past.

FYI, our office connection is crazy good for a local connection in Durban:

Woah! Mind blown, how is that even possible?? Those office connections must be some crazy expensive stuff. Don't think it's in the price range households can afford yet

So far I think the only viable solution is the wireless ISPs which have been popping up. Pay per GB and we usually use 1GB per hour at R25 per gig. The uncapped offerings usually cost from R1500 upwards but at least you get 4mbs upload and higher. And to get successful you should look for other games to stream which are less popular. BF4, WoW and CSGO are pointless to start out with cuz there hundreds of people streaming it. Unless you're well known and have people constantly coming to see your stream every time you play, you're going to be at the bottom of the list with no viewers and no one willing to go that far down the list to check you out

The other challenge with streaming gaming in my mind is that you have to make it entertaining. No one wants to just sit and watch you play when they can just go and play themselves. Most of the successful streamers have a following because they are hyper active of note and manage to entertain people watching.

This is quite subjective to be honest.

We had a massive thread going in the twitch sub reddit about this topic.
In fact I started this thread after giving unknown streamer a try for a week straight.
I made notes of all the things that put me off and posted the results.

It turned into a big discussion about what people want to see and what not.
While there is a trend towards hyper streamers with big personalities like GiG and Amaz.
There is also room for chilled streamers like Alkaizer and such.

You need to find your niche and grow that. Find Your viewer base and grow that.

Yea the only other option for us 10mb home lines is just youtube videos, Twitch would be alot more fun but its just not realistic unless you invest a lot of money into these other internet options.

This is my work line speed test:

Wish I could get that at home
