The Price of Games

Thread Killer Mk VIII
Looking at the Mass Effect: Andromeda thread the prices of that game are 'massive'. Battlefield 1 also launched for an outrageous sum. It seems like console pricing has arrived on the PC.

I feel it's no longer conscionable to buy a game on release or even to pre-order. And I'm now feeling that way towards games I would really really want even.

And thats just talking about the games and not the hardware.

How do you feel?

Yep, I agree, maybe as PC gamers we were somewhat spoilt with the pricing of games when compared to console games. I looked back at Call of Duty 4, released in 2007 and cost R355. If you take an average of 6% inflation over the period the game today could conceivably cost around R655. This ignores the ZAR/USD which was around $1=R7 then, now $1=R14 i.e. the ZAR has lost half its value.

I probably could get comfortable with a price between R600 - R700 for a pc game on release but anything close to R1000 just feels too expensive to me.

For a while now financial pressures have forced me to change the way I acquire games. For the last 2 years I have been hanging on to MMOs that are either free or mostly free. For the single player games I have been checking on steam every day. I have actually played some amazing games that are now 75% less than release day prices and I don't stress anymore. I mean I picked up witcher 3 for R129, Shadows of Mordor for R140, Ark for R100. These games keep me busy for months and I still have others in my library I havent even played yet.

It is really just a mind set change. Going from "Have to have the new and shiny" to "Wow, 2 years on and this game is SO cheap PLUS I get all the DLC for free PLUS my old graphics card can handle it fine", is not as hard as you think.

The pros to waiting to see how good a game is before you buy plus getting extras and on a sale FAR outweigh the con of not being in with the cool crowd who play the game on release day.

I just stopped buying games tbh. If a game is that good people will still be playing it when it goes on special then I just might think about buying it. There is no way I can justify spending R2 000 on 2 games in one month. But I can justify 5 games for R600.

The part that grinds me is the following:
1. Multiplayer games on launch servers always fails, so I just don't bother.
2. We are paying for their next iteration of their games, for example I can't buy bf anymore when I can see that its them changing assets and then making maps.
3. Why buy standalone then season passes then dlc',s when in a year or two you can get it all bundled for R400.

Ever since humble bundle I have not bought a game on release day it is just too exspensive that way.
