The Rasberry Pi Thread

Hi guys, I got my invite this morning to place my order for a Raspberry Pi. :D

This has to be the ultimate geek gadget of the year.

It's first function will be a crucial component in a display I'm building for my living room. It has to emulate some old school hardware that I'm placing in a glass exhibition (if that makes sense).

Some guys I know plan to build download managers from theirs. (Neat idea). You can just VPN from work to your Raspberry at home, *cough* that's downloading all the Linux Distributions *cough*

What are you planning to do with yours?

Admins, can you please correct my spelling from Rasberry to Raspberry in the header and tags? :)

Not sure how a download manager would work since it only has an SD card for storage, you would have to have a separate NAS somewhere else which would make the idea moot since you can get NAS distro's with built in torrent/usenet clients.

The most popular 'power user' function people are using them for are as media streamers. I'm keen to order one myself but I'd rather wait for the next batch which they have said will come with cases.

They have USB ports, so you can mount a large external HDD to use for your download target dir.

I wonder how these will be as a normal media player, playing stuff directly off the external to your TV (I think the Pi has a HDMI output?)

Just mount it in a standard PC Tower Case. :p
What I find staggering is the amount of creative uses it opens up.. there's some interesting ideas on the MyBB Raspberry thread. :)

1 Raspberry + 19" monitor = +- R900... that's a R900 wall mounted digital picture frame that can connect to facebook, interact with your phone, or play Quake 3.. or whatever other features you require.

Well, I saw a guy streaming a PS 3 game through his Raspberry.

Yeah it uses HDMI and the GPU is capable of hardware decoding 1080p BluRay playback @ 30fps.

FAQ

*Ah yeah forgot about the USB.

Me too.

I am going to be using mine for all those things for which I previously had to boot up a much more power-hungry PC, i.e. using the internet, listening to music, and looking at pictures.

So what is the final ZAR price? The only one I can find 20 odd pounds ex. vat and delivery.. I'd love to get one as a media box/downloader.

I must be the only person in the world that doesn't know the use of a Pi :(

Isn't it just a full PC (motherboard/cpu/gpu/ram) in a cigarette sized box?

(not being rude, or trolling. but i am really curious as to the appeal of this. market it to me.)

Yes and it can run on 4x AA batteries... so imagine the stuff you can do!

It's basically like a high powered smartphone, without all the phone bits, for R350. To be more technical it's an ARM based SoC (System on a Chip).

dammit sold out in under a day ... invite required to order ... eish, the world of geek has grown, dont know if its a good or bad thing :-/

Wasn't it initially sold provided that you had pre-ordered or registered on their mailing lists which would allow you to receive notifications of the first batch supplied? I was under the impression that if you placed your name on the list you'd be able to purchase the Raspberry as soon as stock arrives, on a first come first serve basis. How does one obtain these 'invites'?
