I saw someone describe the combat in Kingdoms of Amalur being like that of Gears of War.

I think you confused the GOW (God of War) for GoW (Gears of War). Considering that there is no cover mechanic or much shooting in Kingdoms i would be impossible for the combat to be like Gears, however the 2 button combat is reminiscent of God of War, which I have heard it likened too.

I got the God of War III Pandora's box edition from Syco as a wedding present, finished all 3. I prefer 1 & 2 to 3 though.
