Smoother, larger surface area. You get some pretty crappy basic mouse pads. For FPS gaming especially you want the best possibly surface to track on.

When I got mine they were R300. Not sure if pricing on them are still the same.
Well worth it in my opinion, I always ended up getting raw/itchy/irritated skin on my wrist after long gaming sessions until I got these, so now I have 2, 1 for home gaming and 1 for lanning.
 
Just checked. I can't afford a mouse pad either. Ever since I've been ̶p̶a̶y̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶ ̶q̶u̶a̶l̶i̶t̶y̶ ̶p̶o̶r̶n̶ donating to charity, I've been really short on cash.

my mouse pad lights up and it has 4 usb pads
