Senior Scientist– Nanotechnology (Nanominerals & Biolabels
(Two positions available)
The incumbent is required to lead one of the Units of the DST/Mintek Nanotechnology Innovation Centre
(NIC) specialising in Nanominerals or Biolabels and must be of sufficient seniority to work independently
with minimal supervision. He/she should also have a strong orientation towards fundamental research
(Nanominerals Unit), and for the Biolabels Unit have a strong orientation towards applied research and
have a desire to drive this towards technology commercialisation.
PERFORMANCE AREAS
ï‚· As chief investigator (CI) on projects, assume the role of project manager and technical specialist;
ï‚· Ensure that projects are executed on time and within budget;
ï‚· Provide professional guidance to the project team;
ï‚· Provide regular updates to the head;
ï‚· Ensure that QES procedures are strictly adhered to and that project work is executed with
maximum overall technical efficiency;
ï‚· Actively participate in the training, guidance and motivation of junior staff. Participate in team
debates and technical decisions;
ï‚· Produce professional reports, papers and presentations at local and international conferences;
ï‚· Identify opportunities for technology development and commercialisation;
ï‚· Participate in research and development projects aimed at the strategic positioning of the division
for future growth; and,
ï‚· Keep up-to-date at a professional level with technology- and business-developments that are
relevant to the division’s interests.
JOB KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS REQUIRED
ï‚· A Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology or Chemical
Engineering;
ï‚· Knowledge or experience in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology R&D;
ï‚· Knowledge and/or experience in materials modelling and various nanomaterials generation,
manipulation and characterisation equipment, including High energy ball milling, SEM, TEM,
AFM, XRD, E-Beam Lithography, XPS would be advantageous for the Nanominerals Unit senior
scientist position; and,
ï‚· Two years experience in diagnostics, drug delivery and toxicology related R&D activities would be
advantageous for the Biolabels Unit senior scientist position.
Salary: R348 981 CTC (negotiable).
