Now one of the stories making headlines this week has been the "World of Starcraft" debacle involving, Ryan Winzen, an avid fan of Starcraft, who has been developing a mod for Starcraft II using the Starcraft II editor, to make a WoW version the game. Of course it would make sense to call it World of Starcraft, especially after Blizzard had said it was not intending to make a Starcraft MMO anytime soon. However, fans should know by now that Activision is Evil and that they don't like fan-made games which even remotely that link to their Intellectual Property, even if they are free (remember the fan-made King's Quest sequel?) Seems Activision does not feel flattered, but offended when die-hard fans sink months (even years) of work into a tribute to an Activision-owned game.
But yesterday I clicked: (just before work, FML) why the first thing old Bobby does when he hears about these fan-made games, is call the lawyers, because, if he didn't, it would contradict his hard-earned reputation of being the greediest and most evil CEO of all video game publishers. World of Starcraft for free? What would the fans think? I don't know really, maybe he is trying to compensate for something, maybe he is still trying to gain the approval of his father, I'm no shrink, but it's kind of like that time in Fable, where I was killing everybody out of town for XP then I did one good thing and my horns turned into a halo.... (and butterflies! WTF butterflies?!) Oops, anyway back on topic.
It all ended well for Ryan though, he got a job offer at Riotgames (maker of another DoTA clone, League of Legends)
