:mad:CD Projekt's highly anticipated RPG The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is not due a release until May 17th. Despite the developers efforts to keep the game from pirates, the full game has been leaked online. However, those downloading the game are being shunned by gamers for disrespecting the company's generosity to PC gamers.

It was inevitable that a highly anticipated PC title like The Witcher 2 would be leaked before its official release date. In fact, this was so obviously going to happen that developers CD Projekt prepared for it months beforehand. Firstly they won the hearts of the gaming community by announcing that the game would be released without any form of DRM. They followed this move up by stating that they would be hunting down and issuing out fines to anyone that illegally downloaded their upcoming RPG sequel. The former of these decisions was retracted slightly as it is now only the GoG.com download of the game that will be completely DRM free, with other versions maintaining copy protection measures with SecuROM. However, CD Projekt’s relative ease on the highly controversial topic has won the hearts of many gamers who have shown their support through some rather surprising, and uplifting statements.

One leaker has uploaded some footage of themselves playing the game:

Unfortunately CD Projekt’s threats and security measures have not deterred the full game being leaked for download, along with the security crack. Of course, many people have slammed their fingers on the ‘Download Torrent’ button and are reportedly playing the game with no interruptions. However, the leak has caused a bit of a defiant uproar from many gamers who have shamed anyone for even considering downloading the game before release. It seems that the PC gaming community have sided heavily with CD Projekt due to a high amount of respect for their dedication to PC gaming, maintaining an interest in cRPG’s, and treating gamers with respect rather than condemning them all as thieving pirates. The message being spread across the internet is one that hopes to encourage more pre-orders and patience to ensure that CD Projekt are given the return in profits they deserve for their trust in the gaming community.

Here are a just a couple of quotes from those outraged with leak:

This is one game I would not pirate for sure. The developers have specifically stated that they don't believe in DRM and hence are making it available on GOG for that reason. The DRM in other releases is due to PUBLISHERS (like NAMCO, ATARI) who are forcing the copy-protection.

I haven't played the original Witcher but since it's made by Cd Projekt the guys who brought us GoG I would hope we don't pirate their shiznit.

They seem like a decent, well meaning company and have reinvigorated some gamers interests in cRPG, not through the Witcher, but through their GoG subsidiary. For that they deserve to be supported, and the best support is $.

Do you agree with those staying loyal to the developers and are eagerly awaiting your pre-ordered copy of The Witcher 2?

Or are you about to go frantically searching the web for the leaked copy with no regard for the previous threats and the developers hard work?

By the way this is not as honest as you might think. The Youtube comments in that vid are faked by numerous accounts made by the user/and or friends. You will see when clicking on the link below the video, that it will take you to a site where you have to do a bunch of surveys and/or pay to get access to the supposed download.

The way those sites work is, that you make a profile on it, and spread your "profile link" as much as you can. When people click on your profile it will make them do surveys/and or pay to get access to the information in your profile. In this case, an apparent download for Witcher 2. When someone pays or do their surveys, the maker of the profiler gets a few cents deposited into their accounts- and I think it can be withdrawn to paypal.

Anyway, I have tried before to gain access to these downloads through doing their surveys, but each time it took me to a cellphone subscription site that will take like R5 off my airtime every day. So all in all, it's not honest and I do not recommend anyone signing up for anything that might cost them unaware.

I've seen many of these videos on Youtube before, and the comments all look the same, in the same bad manner of english. There are hundreds of these "free game download" videos on Youtube that look exactly the same. Look them up.

Then that proves my point, this video is a lie to make money on their survey site. I wouldn't recommend clicking on it.

So does this mean us SA users will have DRM? Do we constantly need to be connected to the net to play this then?

I don't believe so. Securom is a one time activation and I think doesn't even need the disc in the drive.

According to the announcement, via BigDownload, SecuROM will be implemented through other digital distribution methods besides GoG, and on disc; however, the game will only use the system in order to “keep pirates from leaking the game before its scheduled release date of May 17.”

Users will only need to log onto the net once to play the title, culling the need to be “always on” to continue playing the game.

PC users will have unlimited installs on an unlimited amount of PCs as well as the ability to play the game on five systems at once.

The game will also contain an an optional registration which will alert players to future patches and access to free content updates.

Sounds good to me. :)

So, I double checked this (not with the intent of pirating, I have a pre-order) and there is NO LEAK. What is up on the torrents is the pre-load of the GoG version of the game. It does not contain an exe file so you cannot play the game.

I hope that whoever pirates this game suffers the wrath of a million bugs and viruses :P. Seriously I hate people who pirate games like this

There can be absolute no moral justification this time round. Pirates can't hide behind they don't like the copy protection, the gog version has none.

cept that is the excuse but the reason is they are cheap bums who don't pay their way in life

Ah, finally the insight we've all been waiting for: Pirates are cheap bums who don't pay their way in life, people who never pay for anything in life would never have bought something, ergo, piracy is not lost revenue.

The piracy debate is over! :D

Double checked? I just clicked on the bookmark of my favourite pirate website and found the leak, with a crack. A lot of people are having problems running it but that's bogstandard stuff when it comes to pirated games. Also, from what I gather, the leak is in Russian. But that has been fixed now.

There's a torrent up on a popular site where people go for torrents that has a conspicuously low number of seeds and leechers. Like, 5% of what a normal new release would have. This is either because of the lack of knowledge about the torrent, or people are waiting for the cracked proper retail release, or, if you want to believe, people aren't pirating it because of morals.

As for me, I'll pirate almost any game. If I really like them, I really buy them (with the exception of anything using Steam DRM), but I'm not pirating The Witcher 2. Just feels wrong.

They also rather gave positive incentive to buy the first game... with cool stuff in the box.
/wonders what are the chances that pc gamers will prove the industry wrong.
