The World's Most Problematic Videogames

Now, a survey has examined the factors associated with problematic gaming, and the results are rather interesting. The study examined a representative sample of the US population aged 18 and over. 37% of respondents played games for at least 1 hour per week; those who did were asked detailed questions about the games they played, and how much they played them. One of the questionnaires they completed was a measure of ‘problem’ gaming, the PVGPQ – which is closely based on an earlier one about alcohol.

So what did this show? One interesting result was that certain game genres were associated with problematic use: first-person shooters topped the list, and roleplaying games (RPGs) – including both the single-player and the massively-multiplayer variety (MMORPGs) – were also correlated with problems. This fits with a widespread impression among gamers (and others) that both MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft, and online shooters like Call of Duty and Counterstrike, attract obsessive players.

Quite interesting, and more legit than a lot of the dipstick research we've seen before considering this is a proper study from the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction.

Care to share with us what you don't agree with?

It's not that I don't agree with it. I totally agree with it. I just hate to read the same stuff over and over again and the stuff that everybody knows by now. Hundreds of these surveys are done every year and all are about the same thing. Plus that survey has what, 3400 participants? What a joke IMO.

What I really hate about these kinds of research is that they are trying to say gaming is addictive, honestly that is an insult to anyone that is ACTUALLY addicted to a serious substance. A crystal meth user would give anything to rather be "addicted" to gaming, it is not something they can merely choose when it gets to that point. A gamer can choose to stop playing no matter how "addictive" a game is.

Really sad that they have to try prove games are addictive.

Depends from person to person I know a friend that gave up smoking, his friend also wanted to stop but after 2 day's without smoking he went back to smoking.
Just because you can say stop at anytime there are people that can't.

I'd like to know how many of these "problem gamers" are predisposed to problems in their ordinary lives (i.e. addictive personalities, depression, anger issues, etc).

It's still my belief that problems with games are because of other inherent mental issues rather than because of the games themselves. I completely agree with the first paragraph of the article that says, "Maybe games are just filling a void that would otherwise be occupied by something else."

I was in a store once and a parent asked her child what game he wanted. He wanted to get black ops 2 and his mom picked up the case and then started bitching because it was R700, didn't even think about getting an age 18 restricted title for here 8 year old child.

That in my opinion is the issue with gaming these days. Parents don't buy porn for their children but this is ok.

Worst part she refused a game in his age bracket claiming its was childish o_0
