Not liking the ending is fine by me. But most of the interwebs DIDN'T grasp it and that is what I'm worried about.
From the article:
Now, I have to admit that I'll be very much surprised (and a little disappointed) if Marco didn't get this ending, but I suspect he's just wording in his own voice the complaints that went down at the time.
Let me explain the illiteracy comment: People don't read. You'll get complaints from people whenever there is a movie out that focusses more on the "sci" than the "fi" as well. It's because they don't understand it. Or any movie with a plot that expects you to remember what happened at the start when the final credits roll. It taxes the grey matter. Do you have any idea how many people out there thought The Sixth Sense or Memento was "stupid" because they couldn't follow it?
That's because they don't read. As Glordit explained very well: reading opens the mind to lateral thinking.
And while I'm busy explaining myself, allow me to also state that with "Jan" I meant van Riebeeck, not Vermeulen.
AFAIK the limited edition of Memento came with a version of the film that would place all the events in chronological order.
Reading does not necessarily increase one's understanding, it can broaden your vocabulary and help strengthen your imagination. I would go as far as to say that, in my experiences so far, learning and understanding how to read and understand what was read is more vital. Than simply reading. Almost every writer always has some form of motif in their writing, when you learn to understand and find it in an authors work, it makes understanding so much easier.
