The worst modern videogame endings

Not liking the ending is fine by me. But most of the interwebs DIDN'T grasp it and that is what I'm worried about.

From the article:

Now, I have to admit that I'll be very much surprised (and a little disappointed) if Marco didn't get this ending, but I suspect he's just wording in his own voice the complaints that went down at the time.

Let me explain the illiteracy comment: People don't read. You'll get complaints from people whenever there is a movie out that focusses more on the "sci" than the "fi" as well. It's because they don't understand it. Or any movie with a plot that expects you to remember what happened at the start when the final credits roll. It taxes the grey matter. Do you have any idea how many people out there thought The Sixth Sense or Memento was "stupid" because they couldn't follow it?
That's because they don't read. As Glordit explained very well: reading opens the mind to lateral thinking.

And while I'm busy explaining myself, allow me to also state that with "Jan" I meant van Riebeeck, not Vermeulen.

AFAIK the limited edition of Memento came with a version of the film that would place all the events in chronological order.

Reading does not necessarily increase one's understanding, it can broaden your vocabulary and help strengthen your imagination. I would go as far as to say that, in my experiences so far, learning and understanding how to read and understand what was read is more vital. Than simply reading. Almost every writer always has some form of motif in their writing, when you learn to understand and find it in an authors work, it makes understanding so much easier.

The reason that I haven't gone further than Assassin's Creed II is because of the endings of the first two games. The ending of the second game literally made me nauseous... Still they are fun games though.

Ugh, I got over the AC games when they started their "to be continued" BS. I don't have time for games that end like soap operas. I have no issue with a game that has a story spanning several games, but then each game must at least have a self-contained story.

Or, they grasped it and still thought it was a crap ending. Not everyone enjoys the things you enjoy.

Pretty much. I think claiming people who didn't like it didn't grasp it is disingenuous. It might be true in some cases, but I genuinely just thought it was a pretty stupid ending to an already ham-fisted story. It definitely wasn't the "Citizen Kane of gaming" everyone made it out to be.

My thoughts on why people loved the game so much is that it was not because it was actually that good, but because everyone else around them was praising the game to high heavens, so they did too because they didn't want to feel left out or contrarian. And thus started the cycle that saw the elevation of a somewhat mediocre game to godhood.

Yeah, that's pretty much exactly how i feel about statements like that. You welcome to disagree with someone, saying nah I like it, I think its good because of reasons x,y and z. But to say, people who didn't like must not have understood it, is as you say, disingenuous.

To be fair, it's equally disingenuous to say that everybody liked the game because that was the popular opinion. I thought the game had a good story, if a bit convoluted. That might be reason enough for someone to not like the story or its ending.

Some people liked Bioshock Infinite's story and some people didn't. Some people grasped the ending, some people didn't. There are four possible groups within those criteria, not just two. Can we just agree on that?

Can we have a 5th, "Meh" group please?

Lot more than four, if I know gamers:

Grasped and liked
Grasped but didn't like
Didn't grasp but liked
Didn't grasp and didn't like
Didn't play but liked that it caused something to fight over on the internet
Didn't play because they heard that it was Satanic or something
Played but didn't reach the end because they went to Google "Elizabeth Porn" and just couldn't bring themselves to play on after that
Played but didn't finish because they got sick from eating hotdogs from trash cans IRL
Didn't play because they had to rush their awkward but impressionable 14yo to the hospital to get his stomach pumped after he ate a hotdog from a trash can
etc
etc
etc

I didn't like the ending of #3 . But I did grasp it :D

We agree on something. I just found it dumb that there were 3 choices, but they had nothing to do with the choices you had made over 3 games. They went to so much effort to allow you to import saves and have your own story from you choices, but in the end, they didn't matter, just choose one of 3 doors.

As much as I love ME3's gameplay, I've never been able to do a full replay of the game. It always just feels so futile. :(

I played ME2 twice, but couldn't bring myself to do the same on ME3. Once I finished it I played MP for a while and haven't touched it since. Still one of my favourite series, which makes the ending even more disappointing.
