Thermal Paste/Grease

*bleh* If the tube says "Cooler Master" you're in the clear. See the graph, fairly little "performance" enhancement between a R35 paste and a R150 paste if you ask me.

I cant remember the exact name of the thermal paste I used, but it was quite a thick Grey paste that I used on my MSI gaming laptop. Did not seems to do the job properly though! Will try get the exact Name and Make for you guys

I got my new mobo this morning. What's the best means/method from removing residue from the heatsink and CPU? What solvents or material should I use?

Toilet paper. Simple as that. I use 2 ply.

Not ALWAYS sound advice. make sure no fibres come off near the motherboard side (tp likes to catch on the little bumps of mobo as you wiping cpu) or the edges of the heatsink. The "official" way is to use cleaning alcohol and a damp (from said alcohol) cloth. NOT a earbud, as that will leave even more fibres. But yea if you generally careful, spit and tp will do the trick. just buff that fucker till she shines :)

Last thing I want are leftover microfibers... I have this small yellow cleaning cloth. I will make it damp then start the cleaning process.
Also, how often should the thermal paste be replaced? Been using the same factory compound since I built it last year Feb, I think it was.

I think as long as you haven't removed the heatsink and broken he "seal" so to speak, also, as long as it's tacky it should still be good. When it dries and becomes hard/brittle is good time to replace it.

Yup it just depends on your luck. Mine lasted 18months, could feel on the chassis behind the cpu when it wore out. My cpu was running 80 degrees on idle... All better now though :)

Cool beans. Cannot wait to get home. :)

Hope you have not done it yet! O_o
What mottamort says is correct. Clean alcohol on a cloth. Only wiping in 1 direction. No circular motions or anything like that!!!!

The initial wipe was done using toilet paper, very carefully and gently. It came off quite clean with minimal effort. I did circular motions but gently and staying within the square.
With the surface mostly cleaned (it was smooth with no visible residue), my brother helped me with the paste/compound application (as I was shaking like a leaf - I was hungry). Had not applied paste before and did not want to screw it up. I probably should have taken temp reading before the swap. Will do it at a later stage.

As long as everything is working! Just for in the future if you do want to clean it properly you can use clean alcohol dabbed on a piece of cloth! I used kitchen towels and also worked well
