Thief reviews rolling in...you may want to cancel that pre-order

So I won Thief from the mygaming steam community group. I think I need to give a short review of it, since everyone in this thread has just been bashing the game.

If you liked Hitman (the new one) at all, you will love Thief. The AI is not as terrible as everyone is saying. The game is actually semi-challenging on the medium difficulty. (I was spotted several times during the first mission where I had to make a run for it). The AI very soon stops chasing you (and then forgets they ever saw you), however, I feel this doesn't really distract from the game. If they kept chasing me till I was dead I would of had to reload, where as now, I would just hide and try again.

I am personally really enjoying the game. Yes, the maps are driven that you need to go to a certain location, however, there is a couple of ways to get to that specific location. The "Focus" mode is actually useful for you to see where is treasure that you might have missed. It is extremely limited so it is not something you can have always on.

I am going to recommend this game as a you should get it. It is really fun. For me personally it has the same feel to is as the oldern day Thief. If you really absolutely hate all the "assist" features, then just turn them off in the advanced difficulty settings (where you can tweak every small thing).

Btw this is for PC. Also the PC port is good with no problems.

Cool good to hear once you finish it on that level, make it harder and report back on ai behavior.

I liked Hitman : Absolution ,and I played Thief today for a bit (on PS4 for about 2 hours), and I will admit that if nothing else the game is rather fun. There is nothing "wrong" with the game as far as I could tell...but I actually believe that works against it. The game is in no way memorable. Nothing about it inspires me to leave other things alone just to play it. It is a good solid game, but I don't think it is a worthy successor to the Thief franchise.

I think I,(and much of the community), would have been far more forgiving and welcoming of the game had it been a new IP; however by being a Thief game it already set a bar or itself that it as not able to surmount.

Hitman =/= Thief

I suppose we can be thankful its not the FPS of "thief" like syndicate...

It seems that Thief 2013 is the Dragon Age and perhaps leading into the Mass Effect 3 of what it was?

No story, but a crap load of fun.
Played a little bit on my mates PS4 and I didn't want to stop playing. Its not really anything like the old Thief games but the atmosphere, audio and graphics makes you want to explore every nook and cranny. I think its pretty decent.

Don't bother reading reviews, just play the game!!

I'll try it when it hits the sales bin.

I gotta add here, as someone who pre-ordered the game, got worried with all the mixed reviews and preview etc, I'm having a crapload of fun. (DISCLAIMER, I love the thief franchise, played all 3 on master, LOVE the hitman series, played all games striving for and getting SA rating).

Anyone who is bothered about "crappy" AI is clearly not playing it right, as its like saying Hitman is too easy coz i can just go and kill everyone really easily...yeah, you can, but thats not how its meant to be played :)
You aren't MEANT to get chased by guards.

Story-wise, its no different to the ludicrous story the other 3 had (all three were pretty much fantasy).

Some reviews/people claimed there wasnt enough actual "thieving". I disagree. the sheer amount of side missions and the open world made me think of my favourite mission from thief 2, the one on the rooftops. Anyone saying there were more "thieving" missions in the other games clearly didnt play more than a few missions, because ALOT of the missions became more than just "go in and steal something".

just my 2c

I've now sunk 30 hours into the game and I've enjoyed every moment - sure, it's rough around the edges and it looks like they rushed a few minor areas of the game to meet a launch deadline, but it's easy to dismiss that and enjoy the game for what it offers. I'm going to write a review once I've completed it - it's really sad it got a poor critical response from some publications.

Ok, this is promising news. Still not convinced it's worth full price, but as a discounted game on Steam in the near future, I'm now more inclined to give it a bash :D

Heh, won't be the first time I love a game Yahtzee doesn't. Still enjoying the crap out of Thief, and only on chapter 5 now (playing it the way it was meant to be, custom difficulty, doing all side quests :D)

Expecting something from a game, eventually leads to a let down.

Do what I do... See a game that you might love is on the way, then ignore all videos, reviews, screenies, forums related to it, then get it and enjoy the crap out of it!!!

I did that with Dungeon Siege 3 and look where that got me. 2 hours in and I was slitting my wrists.

I unfortunately don't have money to waste on games that are not really worth it.

So for the guys still playing thief.. what's your avg fps looking like? I'm getting around 61fps which seems a bit low? or maybe i've just been playing bf4 too much :)

edit: My settings are mostly on high expect for shadows

also getting in the 60's on mostly high, altho I notice after alot of quicksave/quickloads (happens alot when you play on custom - no alert etc) it starts to stutter quite a lot whenever i swoop. at which point i gotta quit and open it again :(

I must say the 1.3 patch seems to have done wonders for me...

Busy on chapter 5 now, holy cow it's such a 180 spin from the norm, very well done.

Thief kinda seems like a mixed bag. Some people loving it, some hating. I still havent gotten it yet after the first reviews came in (and i was so so keen for it). Has 1.3 patch made it worth shelling out hard earned cash for?
