Does it actually connect on 3G or HSDPA or step you down to GPRS?

I force mine on 3G / HSDPA only, to stop it from stepping down which it sometimes does and then your connection is shit.

Have you tried the other APN's?

I haven't tried to force it to 3g only. Signal is good, connected at hsdpa, then goes to 3g 384... sometimes falls to EDGE. I must say, MTN EDGE is damn fast. :D

Other APN's? didn't know there was more than one. :o

Ye, speeds are not bad on there. It's one of the reasons I changed from Vodacom to MTN, they are hella more reliable and faster IMHO.

There are 3 different APN's.
1/ default
2/ internet
3/ mtnvpn (unrestricted, you need to have your SP activate it for you and must be on contract and it was free too afaik)
 
ghastly ............ /me had no luck with any interwebz connections so sitting without until Telscum decide to pull finger it is .... can I get a sarcastic 'yay' and 'woot' :o
