Oh, and last I heard, if you somehow go over your cap, you will get that much less the following month. I cannot confirm how true this is. But for price, they're your best bet.

3. NetGear routers are my preference, I use the DG834GT, but, you can't go wrong with D-Link or Billion either. Just. Don't. Buy. Cheap. Shit.

1. Okay. so if there are telephone lines in the building, it's not a problem to pull one in? And if they put the line in...do I have to wait a month for a tech to come and convert it into ADSL? WOW!

2. Midnight disconnections? for how long? when does it reconnect? and does it simply drop all your connections? Coz that will be irritating as hell if I'm jamming some PS3 online or something.

3. I was thinking netgear. This one looked nice:

I'm moving back to CT (driving down Omega) on the 6th of November. Trying to organize Telkom to come install my line the 7th. They are gonna install a 4mb line for me. Then I'm thinking of using the 20Gb package from Afrihost.

3 Questions:

1. The 4mb line telkom installs. Do they put in a normal telephone line and just go from there??? How do they actually put in the telephone line? What's the process behind that? I know if you have a telephone line, it's quick and easy to put in an ADSL line. I don't. But I suspect some of the other tenants in my building might. Is this a problem?

2. Afrihost? are they reliable? And are they good?

3. What router should I use. And if I use the Self-Install option from Telkom, is it hard to install it and get it up and running?

Please don't be knob-jockies and direct me to other threads...just help me damnit!!!! :D

To add on to what Ly said:
1. There probably is a line through to you flat in the complex. You just have to pay them the exhorbitant fee to come in and put in the li'l grey box outlet thing. You get the phone line, and then the DSL line. You can call or order online or go through to a local branch. Remember that there are installation costs for both, but you can get aronud that if you're planning to take a call option, as they then do the installation for free.

2. What Ly's talking about there: If you exceed your usage, they're entitled to either charge you extra or deduct it from your next month's usage. It seems they're going with the latter option most of the time. So you're still getting what you pay for, at the end of the day. If you use 150% in month 1, you'll get only 50% in month 2. You can top up, though.

3. Afrihost don't provide a router, so you will be shelling out for one there. As Dixie said, you now have to verify the line by going to the site (just call their free number for the order number, if you're not sure). And done.

No one needs come in to enable the line once they've 'installed' the 'phone line. It's done remotely. It could be instantaneous; it could be a wait. There's no judging with Telkom.
And remember that you'll be paying for the telephone line rental and the DSL line rental every month.

Nah... Just dealt with Telkom more often than I would ever like to admit...

1. Assuming there are phone lines already in the building, but not necessarily connected to your specific apartment/residence, all the tech (the first one who will be sent out to install your line) will do is drill holes, drag through (or install new) wires and attach a 2-socket plug for you, in which you can connect your POTS filter (for the phone/fax) and the router.

They tend to take their time to come through, but fortunately I've never had to wait more than 2 weeks for a line to get installed. However, they'll first wait for one tech to install the line (if it's a fresh install) before they'll send out another tech to activate your DSL by hooking it up to the DSLAM (don't ask me why, it's just how it's always been with me) which, fortunately for me, has always been done within 48 hours. So I wouldn't fret too much.

2. Well, as per this thread, Afrihost originally employed 12-hour disconnections, this was changed to 24 after this thread was started and people complained. Personally, I quite like Afrihost's representative on MyBB, so I would sign up with them for that, and not only just for the cheap prices. The disconnects just force your router to re-establish a connection.

3. Looks fine :p I hear some of the older G-series NetGears have some trouble with heavy connections (i.e. torrents), but I'm not 100% sure which ones they are. I believe there'd be firmware updates to fix any problems though ^.^

Oh, and as Dixie said (I so stoopie) remember: http://www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl - you'll need it if you do self-install, otherwise your line will only be able to access the Telkom site :p
