Yeah thats freaking interesting I would really want to be still alive to see that happening.

Yeah, apparently it should play havoc with anything electronic. Come to think of it, I wonder what the effect on Wi-fi signal will be.. I hate being this dumb with electronics. :(

Coolio, the more the merrier :D I presume the ppl in this thread already did the obligatory harassment for being a girl, so I won't :p

Isn't the magnetic poles also supposed to switch around that time?

Yep, the earth's magnetic field flips every couple of thousand years or some such when the magma in the core reaches a swirling point that causes it to flip around rather quickly, resulting in the iron particles all pointing the opposite way, causing the poles to essentially flip. I watched a documentary on it a good while back, rather interesting stuff.

Yeah thats freaking interesting I would really want to be still alive to see that happening.

It would be rather hectic - causing whales and birds to be completely directionless. Poor swallows will be having a COLD summer :D

Well south will be north.

I am worried about the animals never mind wi-fi and all the electronic stuff.

The reassuring thing is that, like Voicy said, it happens on a regular basis, so the species that are alive would have survived the shift before. Just hope that the shift combined with the influence humans have had on population numbers won't screw them.. :(

Well south will be north.

Thing is, while the shift is happening, the magnetic fields will be moving, creating current in metals, effectively short circuiting anything with a low enough tolerance. I think. I seem to remember words like 'flux' from 1st year physics.

Give this a quick read...

They put trackers and mini cameras on all sort of birds during there migrations between southern africa and europe, all of them seemed to folow paths that linked to large visible landmarks like lakes and even human made things like towns and cities.

The younger birds follow the older ones that leant it when they were young, and so on.

They mght use the magnetic sences not for direction finding, but rather to just keep in straight(ish) lines.
