What happens if you remove the mem card from the camera and read it via a card reader?

yeah i came to that assumption too now it's not mine it's a friends finally got iy open but now it's ANC photo's so i guess they are lost, but why can you view them on the camera?

same thing takes ages to read it and then hangs the pc
But in the camera it shows the pics no issue

First, try to create an image of the card. Try using Win32DiskImager (google it). Test the image by writing it to a different card of the same capacity and inserting that card in the camera. You should still be able to see the photos from the new card if all goes according to plan. You know have two "corrupt" cards, one to play with, one for back-up, just in case. If this fails, you will need to turn cowboy (meaning you will edit the card without a back-up, bareback).
Next you will need to run some sort of error checking software on the card. I don't have any real suggestions for specific software. Start with the built-in windows tools and google for something if that doesn't work. There are tools specifically made for SD cards from cameras.
