You are missing out. Dr Who and Torchwood are two of the better (best?) Sci-Fi series out there.
If you decide to give Dr Who a go, start with the 2005 series where Christopher Eccleston plays the doctor.

Doctor Who is a great show (the one from 2005 as per Misder44, also the longest running sci-fi show on tv) but takes a while to get into it. Don't blink, loved those episodes!
