Holy shit on toast, get a load of this:
I'm doing Christmas shopping and Student #1 desires a new cell phone. Xperia M, to be exact. So I find a white one on Orange.co.za and proceed to order it. Then I get this email from them:

Dear Sir / Madam,

Due to a security restriction imposed on us by our credit card
processing company we are only able to ship your order to your credit
card statement address.

You may not be aware that in an Internet transaction the retailer
carries ALL of the transaction risk.

This is why, in order to proceed with the secure dispatch of your
order, we need the following documents:

- a copy of both sides of your ID (passport, ID card or
driving licence).

- a copy of both sides of the credit card used as a
method of payment (both sides – you can hide a group of four digits
except the first one)

- a proof of the delivery address less than 3 months old
(gas, electricity, landline, Internet bill… or any other proof of
delivery address). If the delivery address corresponds to your
office, please send us a document that proves your link to the
company (business card, professional e-mail address, payslip, etc.).
We reserve the right to ask for further details.

Please upload the data we required through this link
[link removed] using one
of these formats: gif, .jpeg, .jpg, .xls, .zip and .pdf.

NB: ***If these documents are on different files, please repeat the
process as many times as necessary***

From your point of view, we hope you will realise that we are trying
our best to ensure legitimate use of your card. While you may know
that your card is not being used fraudulently in this instance, we
have to take what steps we can to verify your identity, and so
protect you against fraud.

We ask for a fax copy of the card to prove that the person using the
card actually has it in their possession, we need the signature to
match it against the signature on the order confirmation and hence
try to verify the identity of the person placing the order.

As a value based retailer, we take what we believe is a responsible
attitude towards safeguarding both you and ourselves, while employing
off-line methods to verify customer identity in order to keep costs
as low as possible.

While we understand the inconvenience, we hope you understand why we
make these requests. The information provided in some instances does
occasionally clearly indicate an attempted fraud when other measures
show nothing suspicious.

Do not hesitate to contact our Customer Service for any change.

Best regards,

Orange

All this after I already had to do that VISA verification where they send you a OTP.
I realise this is a legit email, but there is no way I'm trusting these guys to keep all that sensitive information safe. They are basically asking for an identity fraud lucky packet.

On that note, who knows a decent online retailer where I can get a Sony Xperia M?

Busy checking right now, thanks. Simplicity online has some and a place called Digitalgr8ness, based in Cape Town. So anybody in the mofo city willing to go break some kneecaps on my behalf if I order from them and they try some funny stuff?
