Thread of PC Woes, Troubles, Problems, and Issues

here's an interesting one for you guys.

my screensaver never goes on. and the monitor never switches off.

it's been like that for a LONG time, but I though it might just be because my Windows is a bit tired. but I did a fresh install the other day after my hardware upgrade and it's still doing it.

also, my desktop icons don't stay where I put them. soon as I reboot they moved back to where they were originally

:wtf:

Do you have any sort of wireless devices connected?

just my keyboard

If you had it for the time that your pc have been having the problems. It can also be a Usb mouse that could be causing the pc not to go into Idle.
Try unplugging it for that 10min to see if your screensaver comes on. you can set it lower for 2min and unplug it for that while and see what happens.

I've been using that keyboard for almost 10 years now I think, and the mouse (MX518) for 5 - 7 years and never had this problem.

but I'll try your idea tonight. if it works then I will be completely dumbstruck :wtf:

Yeah you got nothing to lose. The other thing is drivers but seeing as you have had this for a while and probably went trough a few drivers.

well with the last two Win installs I've just been using the default drivers windows installs. perhaps I should try download and install the actual hardware drivers as well

Right, I did that.
My audio still fails to start (I get a 1608 dependency service failed or something like that).
Connection wise, it started, but I get nada. Tried to set up another connection and the same thing happened.

Hmmmm have you tried cleaning your registry? Also make sure your RPC has started.

So the drivers?
yeah, can you imagine. installed the actual device drivers this morning and everything was back to normal

it seems some how the default windows 7 drivers for the keyboard and/or mouse kept it awake :wtf:

PCI E is backward compatible. Not an issue.

Is the PSU sufficiently powerful? Have you connected the PSU power leads to the card?

Thanks Havoc, card is powered as I can see both of the cooling fans spinning on the card. My PSU is a 520W Antec, do you think this is enough?

I've updated the BIOS, seated and reseated the card, but still my PC does not get beyond the initial Intel screen.

I guess my options are as follows:

1. Get a replacement card, although I do not know for certain it is faulty.
2. Upgrade the PSU
3. Upgrade the PSU and mobo.

How old is that PSU of yours? I've found in the past that the older PSUs get the less juice they push through, so you'll be left looking for power despite thinking you have enough. It might help if you could say what else is in the box with regards to CPU, number of HDDs etc etc.

That's just a guess on my part though, it could still be a faulty card - all I can think of suggesting is finding a way to test it by putting it in a different machine.

Hi Shadow, thanks for your reply. I replaced the PSU with a new 700w Huntkey, still no luck. I really think that my CPU (i5-760), with a P55 mobo are the problem. Going to have to upgrade soon in any event. I'll try and find someone to test the card as well.

-Your m/b doesn't have integrated graphics, right? I had some trouble recently with my BIOS being unable to decide which display output it wanted to use.

-The fact that it POSTS with an old card and not a new one must mean the BIOS is having some trouble figuring out what card you put in. Another option might be to go into bios and specify the primary display device as PCI-Ex 16. (i.e not 'Auto')

-Another long shot might be to put your old vga card in, boot to safe mode, uninstall ALL VGA drivers via device manager. Then reboot.

-And of course there is the blatantly obvious question of: "Did you plug it in the right hole?" :)

So recently I've gotten myself a new graphics card (Twin Frozr iii R7950 to be exact) but i've been having some trouble with its temp. My previous card, 6770 use to idle around 45C which i wasn't that bothered with. But with the new card i've noticed it idle at around 50C which seems weird to me.

I don't know if i'm missing anything but as far as i know it shouldn't be that high? Could it be that i'm mistaken and the 50C is normal or should i be concerned?

I can't remember what the temp spiked at during gaming last night but will test again tonight at post it here. I would just like to know if anyone else knows of a solution. I've googled, but my skills kind of failed :(
